Thanks for the various replies, very enlightening.
I spent most of Thursday on the phone with Apple, trying to reload and update the software on the phone with no success. Eventually they suggested I go to the local Apple store for them to try using an iMac to reload and update the software, and they organised an appointment for 19:45. Same thing in store, obviously a faulty phone. The store assistant advised I could return it to Argos for a refund or they'd make a like for like replacement in store as they were the manufacturer. So I left the store with a far happier son than I went in with.

Great that you talked with Apple. Definitely helps when the manufactur has its own presence on the high street as it gives you that extra avenue to resolve an issue in person.
