Netflix advice.

We have Sky and it seems though the record facility maybe failing on the Skybox. We were wondering whether this our chance to ditch sky and get Netflix. I just cant seem to find what is on Netflix though. We watch very little TV approx an hour and half a day mainly news programmes.
So can anyone tell me can I watch channels such as BBC 1 and 2 on Netflix. I know I could get a free month trial for Netflix and look at whats on offer but as I don't have a smart TV so that avenue is closed.

How were you going to access Netflix?
  • If Netflix provides what I want I would up date our TV - its pretty ancient approx 15 years old.
  • Netflix only let's you watch selected programmes/films.. not BBC channels.

However I have a now tv box.. you purchase this (usually with a free months pass for entertainment/movies/sports) however you don't have to have any of these

Once you have the box it runs through your internet and you can watch all free view channels, plus access apps such as BBC iPlayer/itv player. And of course you can purchase one of the monthly extras if they are beneficial for you however we do not bother:)

do you have access to a laptop or pc, or smartphone? You can check out netflix on any of these. You can't watch BBC etc but if you have a tv licence, you can watch on iplayer, which is usually available on smart tv's.

I ended up buying a streaming stick for my tv as I found the smart features weren't that great - the apps were a bit flaky and weren't updated often (mine's an LG tv). A streaming stick such as amazon firestick is cheap and can be moved from tv to tv and is cheap to replace if it goes wrong - a tv isn't!

Netflix is just a service. It's not a device, it's not a box, it's not a TV. So you can't use it to "replace" your old TV.

You just pay Netflix a monthly fee and that allows you to log on to Netflix on any device that you have that can access it. Devices which you can use to access Netlflix are smart TVs, phones, tablets, laptops, Sky boxes and things such as the Amazon Fire Stick and the Google Chromecast which can turn your old TV into a Smart TV (if it has an HDMI socket).

Netflix doesn't have TV channels. It just lets you watch movies and TV "box sets" whenever you like.

You need to have a decent broadband connection for it to work well.
  • As stated above, Netflix is a streaming service that produces a lot of their own content(generally of a really high quality BTW). They don't supply the Freeview channels. You can keep your Sky box(presuming it's not Sky Q) and get the likes of the BBC & ITV channels through that as Freesat from Sky.

For Netflix you'd need perhaps the Now TV box mentioned above which just needs an HDMI input on the TV, they also have a Now TV stick but you need a USB port for that and your TV maybe is too old to have one.

You don't necessarily need a smart tv, any tv with an hdmi port will do. Get any streaming device and plug in and off you go. I have a Youview box and Fire tv and I can access pretty much everything.

If that is all you watch, then Netflix (and indeed any subscription TV service) is not for you and you are simply wasting money subscribing to any of them.

If your TV is no longer up to scratch then by all means upgrade it to a more modern set, but all you need is access to Freeview (through a roof aerial) or Freesat (via your existing satellite dish). If you also require recording facilities, you can also obtain recorders without subscription.

We switched to FreeSat and bought some Humax 1100s satellite boxes on ebay - they record just like Sky+ and the programme planner is great - you can look back in time and it then automatically switches to Catch Up when you select a programme. There is also an On-Demand section on the main menu that includes the Netflix app, amongst others. We don’t miss Sky at all and I certainly don’t miss paying £60 a month!

Do you know anyone who has Netflix who would let you watch some or could you access Netflix on your PC and then decide whether to go with Netflix.
