Thanks but no it isn't
It is housing association flat so no idea about the immersion heater details. All I can say is that when our gas boiler broke down last month, I checked the electricity key meter, put the immersion on for an hour, checked it again and it had gone down by £1. When we put it on for half an hour, it only went down by just over 50p.
Hope that you have now got your gas boiler fixed then, as that is very expensive!

Ive stopped using gas which in our house could not be used on a timer. I now use electric immersion and have had a timer fitted. 4/5 people in our house and we use electric shower rather than a bath. We have set the timer for half an hour in the mprning at 8am and 15 mintues at 4.30 pm. This is "just about" enough for us. If we need a bit more for washingup or something I boil the kettle. Not sure what its costing per hour but it hasnt bumped our bill up much-it is costing less than heating it up by gas 24/7 tho thats for sure. I did read the meters on a weekly basis. We are saving about £5 per week on gas so if it was 30p per hour then its about£2.60 per week so I think it was well worth doing.I am sure Ive at the least-cut the hotwater costs by 50%.Annual Grocery budget 2018 is £1500 pa £125 calendar month £28.84 pw for 3 adults0

So sorry Cardew, but that isn't rubbish - it's how much it costs US on our immersion heater - which is what I stated in my post. I didn't say it costs that for EVERYONE but that it cost that for US.
An immersion heater is no more than 3kW.(some are smaller)
The price of electricity is usually between 7p and 10p a kWh. So even if an immersion heater was actually heating for the whole hour(which is unlikely) it would cost normally less than 30p.
If your key meter went down by £1 in an hour you either have a fault, something else is using the electricity, or as espresso suggested(which you refute) you have your meter set to reclaim a debt. To suggest the costs don't vary if the water is warm or not, is even more of an indication you have a fault.
The OP asked about the costs involved with using an immersion heater. The response that yours costs £1 an hour is presumably to provide them with information and suggests that is a typical figure; why else post it?
As you can see from the OP's response he/she took it that £1 was a typical cost.
So I was(and am) saying it 'is rubbish' to suggest that an immersion heater costs £1 an hour to run.0 -

If you need to pay someone to supply & fit then it will not be economic to fit one in your circumstances IMO, given that timer cost is approx £20 and labour cost is anyones guess, at least one hour charged minimum although we all know it will only take about 30 minutes
Fitting is easy & straight forward, only 3 wires and all instrustions on the packet, need one terminal screwdriver, 2 screws, some means to strip back wires and common sense
If you do not know what you are doing ensure you get someone who does
I am an electrician so I appreciate what is simple to me is not to someEight out of ten owners who expressed a preference said their cats preferred other peoples gardens0 -
OK fair enough, there may be a fault with our immersion heater. But I don't see how that would mean I am talking "rubbish". I offered my experience about how much ours costs to heat water.
I apologise for attempting to assist by posting a reply to the OP.
Sorry OP.
Shan't bother trying to help anyone in future if the response is that I'm talking rubbish and for assuming that my only experience with costs of an immersion heater could be similar to anyone elses.working on clearing the clutterDo I want the stuff or the space?0 -

take no notice of cardew who at times seems aggressive with his posts ,people can only post from their own personnal experiences, which you have done truthfully, his post that you are talking rubbish is his opinion only and probably not shared by the majority on this forum.
dont let one persons views stop you from posting :cool:0 -

Perhaps you should check how much you are actually being charged per kWh as it certainly should not be costing you £1 per hour to use your immersion. Do some investigation and this thread may save you some money on your electricity costs. Blue text on this forum usually signifies hyperlinks, so click on them!..:wall:0 -

Of course it is my opinion, thats what the OP asked for and thats what was given.
Do you seriously believe the majority on this forum believe immersion heaters cost £1 an hour to run?
Presumably you for one?0
