windows x32 works on a x64 cpu. and if there is a lack of memory (say 2gb or less) you are probably better of on windows x32

Please tell us the make, model and spec of your system.

Giving us the exact error message could be helpful

Ok, unless anyone has any good ideas I'm giving up and it's Christmas.

The systems not that important to me as I'm Android based. I only got it for it's big screen and direct connection to the printer. It'll get used once in a blue moon.
Happy Christmas to you all and thanks.

    However... I've looked up the processor I've got. It's an Intel 2 core T7200 and that's 62bit !!!
So that means its the 32bit updates failing.
It's perfectly fine to have a 32 bit (x86) operating system running on a 64 bit (x86_64) processor.
Windows update will not mistakenly download 64 bit updates for a 32 bit operating system.
I really think you are barking up the wrong tree thinking your update issue has anything to do with 32 vs 64 bit. It's likely unrelated.
Try resetting Windows update using the guide debitcardmayhem posted.

You can use 64bit Windows on computers with low RAM and there's security related benefits for doing so.

32 bit operating systems are on their way out due to the fact that almost nobody is using a 32 bit CPU any more. 32 bit support is being removed from the Linux kernel and 32 bit versions of distributions are being discontinued.

Yes, but 64 but uses twice the memory of x32. I tried this on a laptop and the 2GB ram did work, but the screen could not even keep up with mouse movement with no apps running. I had to move the mouse and wait many seconds to find the current cursor location. It was truly abysmal remided me of 286 days with the wrong app. Perhaps with a SSD things may have been different. It was a Dell D600.
