    Guys does it really matter?

It matters when i'm being corrected on something i wasnt wrong about, yes. It certainly wasnt "just a steel A8".

But back to the point in hand, what about a late model S Type? Did you see the one i linked too?

I didnt totally ignore the size comment, i just didnt have to correct you on that point. ;)
  • Simple question, if you were looking to spend £4k on a barge, would you get either a Lexus GS300 or Mercedes W211 E class. Or something else.?

    I'd get a barge

I do like the S type, but would ideally be a car that can be ran into the ground. Historically a Lexus or old Merc will/should take longer to destroy.

I'd expect an old Rolls to be better loads of them still on the roads relative to the amount produced.

Maybe. But you'd be getting a younger and / or lower miles S Type for your money to offset that.

I was never a fan of the GS Lexus, personally. I always thought it looked ungainly.

A big petrol engined E Class would be a good call - though watch for rust (and spidering of stone chips) if before around 2006 (i think)

Spirits and (especially) Shadows are either far from cheap or utter sheds. There is no mid-ground.

A Phaeton is a steel A8. No more, no less.

    Same size as XJ/S/7/A8 etc.
But with a better interior, all models have 4 wheel drive, and without the horrendous image Audi drivers have.
I have a Phaeton, and didn't like the A8 at all - the Phaeton was much nicer to sit in.
To call them identical to the A8 shows absolutely zero understanding of the point of the Phaeton :)
  • I have a Phaeton, and they're now bang in the middle of luxobarge territory - I drive mine in town and city centres, and as long as it's not a LWB version it'll be fine.
FYI it's really not that large, so you're looking for something other than a luxobarge if it's too big. Premium saloon is probably better - perhaps something A4 or A6 sized.

With regards to running a Phaeton, they're really not too bad - I paid well under £2.5k for mine, and it took the total to around £3k once I'd sorted a few niggles out (new tyres, servicing, gearbox oil change, boot controller replacement).

Insurance on them is absolutely horrendous, I'd check that if you do consider one.
