7 meter cable run from B.T. Master socket

Options
Is running approx 7 meters of rj11 cable from B.T. Master socket a worthwhile excersise to try and gain maximum fibre internet speed.
I ask ahead of sky soon to offer upgrades from 40mb upto 63mb-hopefully by spring 2019.
As my master socket is opposite side of living room from router I agreed at the time for the engineer to use most convenient tel socket next to router knowingly that my line wouldn't run at max 40mb, it's been stable 30mb since install past 2 years.
If I were to run the suggested rj11-would I get closer or less loss from max speed.
<£2 for a cable.

No, changing one extension for another will have no discernable effect. (unless it is a lot less length).

I bet if you plug into the master socket right next to it you won't get much of an increase either, but at least try that first to see what you are up against.

Thought they were no longer allowed to call it mac 40 anyway ;-)

Thanks I asked as other forums had suggested it would be beneficial speed gain considering moving master socket could be expensive whereas the rj11 cable is less than 5 pounds.
Think I'll run a temp cable trom Jan anyway without fixing to skirting boards unless there's a speed gain.

  • I bought a long and cheap rj11 cable to move my router and it lost 1mb from my 3.5 mb speed. I use a long ethernet cable between pc and router with no speed loss.

If you can only get 30M now, would a 63M product give you any extra? You have a limited speed due to the length and quality of the line from the fibre cabinet so would a higher speed package actually give you any more?

It's always best to plug your router directly into the master socket with the shortest cable. Can't you place your router next to the master socket?

Exactly not sure what if any speed increase by running the cable from mastersocket.
Seem moving master socket could be an option-possible £65 Engineer call.
I stopped short of ordering cable from Amazon last night as I think I'll make up the 5 pounds cable with some pre Brett no deal and purchase some home essentials maybe upto 20 pounds order after new year.
Another cable option could be from Currys though it's 10 pound for 10 meters a little more expensive.
I still think a £5 cable from Amazon is a simple test to check if any gain though I will be hoping to get closer to 40MB initially until 63MB upgrade commences.

I can't as mentioned in one of my multiple reply's :)
No power socket near Master socket at all -the only very. Slight disappointment of my flat
Unless I used upto 5 meters power extension -I have one at home though not that length at all
Maybe it could be an idea to try though don't think current extensions will reach that far-agai n would be interested to try.

you could use a mains extension so power closer. In some cases drill though a wall if a socket is fitted on the other side of the wall.

Think for 5 or 10m, that what ever you do, at best your gain will be marginal compared to your your existing wire.

Correct answer is No speed increase at all
Managed to move router and mains extension closer to master socket with existing filter and cable- 25MB approx.
Since re connected to extension socket 30MB.
I'll not go ahead with Master socket idea.
    Thanks all
