Bought a flight today to fly from Gatwick

So my Mum missed her flights this morning and panic bought some flights from Gatwick not realising the drone security issue.
She doesn't have travel insurance (I know, so silly) but I think regardless, she should not have been allowed to buy those tickets today when Gatwick hasn't had any flights in or out since yesterday.
Do you think she's entitled to a refund without travel insurance?
Would really appreciate anyone's opinion on this because I'm not sure.
