Yes it maybe overkill. However you are bound to have lots of data on you laptop which could build a very good picture about you if a dishonest person got hold of it.
For example my laptop has my address, bank details, NI Number etc etc and numerous letters and other files which would give a criminal a very big head start in fraud using my name.
That's why I have chosen to encrypt everything but also because it is very easy to do. Much easier than having each file password protected.

I know they say you shouldn't have the same password but really the two files would probably have the same password for both tbh.

Actually i don't have any sensitive data on my laptop. I don't store any passwords, nothing is autofilled and there's no documents on there. I pretty much use it for car diagnostics and the odd thing when i need it.

All my sensitive stuff is on the password protected PC.

This all seems a little pointless in the days of mobile banking. If they are having to mess around getting into a remote database, it might as well be the banks.

Yes, in which case encrypting all you files would be overkill. Very different to my situation because I may well have hundreds of files with some sort of personal data on them amongst possible a thousand other non sensitive files.

And how do you suggest they know a complete list of all accounts they have, including all payments on those accounts and what to do to simplify them in the event i cannot advise them on what to do or how to do it?
  • The only security i would adopt is calling the spreadsheet/database something like 'types of plasterboard' rather than 'familys bank account details'

I have all my accounts listed on my banking app with all the payments and direct debits etc to hand. It couldn't be simpler, I'm not sure what you think you do with a banking app.
they will have to do no more than you are expecting them to do. Log in and edit your spreadsheets, but they will have more control over the accounts.
    Your choice of course.

OBVIOUSLY they can log in and see the direct debits and standing orders.

Some are obvious - electricity & gas bills for example.
Others are in place purely to satisfy account benefits.

Some accounts need keeping an eye on and working with manually else there'll be a charge.

How are they to know what to do with what unless i create a list explaining what everything is for and what to do in the event i can not do it for them? Such as .... close down this, that and the other accounts, move all the money to that account, close all those standing orders & direct debits off, that's your money all in 1 spot now and that's the spot that it's best to be in. This is simplified in its most basic form.

Without an instruction they wont know. They could have all the apps in the world but they wont know what to start closing off unless told.

I got past caring too much about it all. Whether its locally stored or in the cloud there's always the possibility someone can get hold of it and over the last 30 years I've seen enough supposedly impenetrable encryption cracked as to know that nothing is totally secure. So unless you store it all inside your head there's no guarantees and even then I suppose someone could hypnotise you.

I hand my card over to people i trust.

So you have a bank card you never use to pay for anything? You might as well send it back to the bank.

Not sure if you're trying to be funny or you're trying to make a point.

If you're trying to be funny, you're not.

If you're trying to make a point, what point are you trying to make?
