I recently started getting into investing and started with VUSA (VOO) in mid july. The price was initially rising but since has been going down. I understand that this is partly due to negative pressures on US economy with trade deal with china and also that the VUSA has a high tech percentage which isn't doing to well atm. what are people's views on how this ETF will fair in 2019?

if anyone says he knows, he would be lying.0

ok next question is what metrics to you usually use to decide when to buy or sell. i also understand investing is often supposed to be long-term but then when do you decide to cut your losses or hold0

If you pick your investments carefully you should hopefully never need to cut your losses.0

Unless, like me, you only sell when you are about to spend the money so you won't be buying back in0 -
How it will perform in 2019 isn't really a question worth asking. Firstly because nobody knows and secondly because if your investment is long term it won't matter what happens next year. More important is what happens over the next 10 years - which again nobody knows.
What you could ask yourself is why you chose a US fund to invest in rather than a global one. Is the US going to be the fastest growing economy over the coming years?0 -
US interest rates have been an upward trajectory for some time. Likewise the rise in tech stocks hid the decline in the broader index. Possibly you simply arrived late at the party. As many guests have been leaving for some time.0

The S&P500 is generally pretty solid, but you are looking at this now far too closely. If you want to keep investing in the fund then set a monthly direct debit into it. You are best investing 'what you can comfortably afford to lose', look at the balance rarely, put it out of your mind.
Money needs to be left invested for years for a much better chance of a healthy, profitable return.
It's very much a long term game. Ignore all the media scare noise and believe in capitalism.0 -

Any index will be bouncing all over the place if only looking at 6 month periods
Invest monthly to even out peaks and troughs0 -
Invested in this etc 16 months ago as long term investment. Seems solid and is still in positive territory. But as it is long term, as anything like this should be, short term gains and losses are irrelevant. Gains and losses only count when you come to sell. If anyone is bothered about short term gains and losses should not be in this game. Btw have 4 other Vanguard etf's all showing losses but they too are long term investments so not too worried0

that's a very good question and I'm realising that i need to be thinking about how etfs/stocks will fair in the future (Instead of the past which is mistakenly what I did)0
