I am keen to get into this and would love to know which online trader you now think is the best! thanks guys! I love the site and it has saved me £££s!
The cheapest and best at the moment is www.iii.co.uk, if you set a trade in advance (even a day) on certain dates then theres NO TRANSACTION FEE, otherwise once this offer is up/you want real time trades its only £10.0 -
1. Open a stockbroking account - make it a low cost one if you're only dealing with small amounts of money and one without an 'inactivity fee' - I use 1st direct and the execution seems pretty reasonable.
2. Do some research on trackers - I tend to use iShares - and if you can, get an Acc fund or a SCRIP divididend to roll up the distributions (assuming you don't want the income for whatever reason).
As a rule of thumb, I aim to keep total costs (include the cost to sell as well as the ETF fee below 1%).
You'll probably want to use your ISA allowance too if you haven't already.
3. Buy the security you want.
4. Make money (hopefully).
On a slight tangent, if you're a student, and this is long-long term money, you may want to consider a FTSE All Share or FTSE All Small tracker, small caps generally do better over the long long term than large/mega caps.
Hi there,
thanks for the detailed reply. I have been busy with uni work, but i have some time to start the trading now. Just wondering if you could recommend any brokers.
the only ones that i know of are:
HSBC
Barclays Stockbrokers
IG
I will probably want to trade 3-4 times a week and will start with about 500 (pounds, no pound sign on keyboard) and i will ideally like to grow my portfolio and diversify.0 -

With that sort of capital base I would suggest you look at something like Interactive Investor's Portfolio builder and look to build a portfolio over time either in quality shares, or in ETF's.
Alternatively you may be better going the fund route, but I don't deal in those so can't really say.Hope for the best.....Plan for the worst!
"Never in the history of the world has there been a situation so bad that the government can't make it worse." Unknown0 -
Im a client of Hargreaves Lansdown actually its a SIPP but I trade probably too often
I like some oil & resource stocks on Aim as they can move quickly (either up or down)
I was very tempted by Creat Resorces following an article in the Times on their prospects following a reverse takeover however they have fallen sharply following their failure to renew mining licences..... is this a buying opportunity maybe  but to risky for me.
You may find "Sharecrazy" an interesting site lots of info & a good community board there dealing costs start at £10 per trade (I think) - the cheapest share dealer might be "The Motley Fool" if you register they bulk all the transactions & I think you pay about £3 to deal which can be good if you are buying something for the longer term for e.g property shares & don't need to trade instantly.
Finally Investment Trusts many run free dealing share purchasing schemes "Trustnet" is a good site to check all their prices & the Net asset value price which could be at a premium or discount.
Good luck
One tip I will give you is to be carefull about following people who tip shares do your own research look at fundementals study balance sheets & be patient it is far easier to lose money than make anyTheres only two rules to remember1) Im always right2) See rule 10 -
Has anyone got any opinions on Super Dry?0

Being 50 pages long I haven't read this thread through, so apologies if covered already.
Why do you not use spreadbetting instead? No capital gains, lower costs, easier trades?0 -

That was really just a general question for those who trade shares.
Spread betting is not hard. Plus you can have a play for a smallish amount of money. The only one I tried was tradefair. You can have a play with a practice account and when you want to trade, they match your first deposit up to a certain amount (Think it was £75 when I did it a while back).
I may be missing something, but I don't understand why you would buy shares instead of spread bet. Spread bet, you bet on a share or an index going up or down, by say £1 a point. If you bet up and they go up 10 points, you make £10. They go down 10 points you lose £10.
But as it is classed as gambling there is no CGT. Just trying to understand why peeps chose to actually buy and sell shares instead.0 -
Spreadbetting is high risk trading not investing . It works best when you guess exactly when a stock will move in just one direction
Try some fantasy share sites to see if you can predict at all
