Car insurance refund

Can someone advise on the following please?

A friend of mine was in dire financial straits so I agreed to pay her car insurance for her in July using my credit card. The cost was about £450. She promised to pay it me back when she 'got straight'. She's now in work and spending money on weekends abroad with her mate, etc etc. The 'friendship' has now ended. No sign of paying me back! I've just contacted her insurance company asking if they can cancel the policy; the answer was no. They suggested that I speak to my credit card company who advised me to go back to the insurance company. Apart from learning a harsh lesson, is there anything I can do please to get even some of the money back? Thank you for taking the time to read this.

Not a lot you can do.....you live and learn.

Just make sure you cancel the continous payment authority with your card company.....you don't want to be making next years renewal as well.

The fact that your card was used to pay for the policy does not give you cancellation rights. Also, as this was done at the time with your agreement and consent, you are not in apposition to backtrack with your bank or the insurer because you now cannot recover your money. Neither party are responsible for or going to get involved because your friend has shafted you.

It sounds like chasing for the money is likely to be fruitless so, yes, it is one of those things that you have to chalk up to experience. The good thing is that you gain two valuable lessons. Firstly, do not lend to friends, no matter how good a friend they may be and, secondly, be more fussy about those who you consider to be a friend. Hang onto those lessons and your £450 may well have saved you a far larger sum in future.
  • Thanks for the comments, they're really appreciated. A hard lesson but as you say, it could save me a lot more in the future.

The insurance company has already made a note not to auto-renew in July.

    Happy Christmas to you all.

I wouldn't take the insurance company word om that......cancel the authority with your card provider
  • Take her to the SCC

    Happy Christmas to you all.

So not only were you kind enough to pay your (now ex-) friend's car insurance, you also agreed to a Continuous Payment authority for her future years insurance?

You obviously expected her hard times were going to last quite some time...

What happened? Did she win the lottery?

Unfortunately it doesn't normally work like that, you're given no option (accept it or abandon the application) something that needs to be stopped.

Will be interesting to see if former friend gets insurance in July or assumes it will have been paid by OP.
  • It’s too late now but you could have disputed this as an unrecognised/unauthorised transaction (even though it was) and the insurance company would have just chased your ex friend for payment. 120 day time limit though.
