If this continues I might start a 'Lose £19k in 2019' thread.

It would be have been cheaper to burn my car and personal possessions than suffer my recent investment performance - and others have seen bigger percentage losses.

    Alex.

So a sacrifice to the gods might fix things, worth a shot. Let us know how you get on.:D

There is no such thing as a Santa rally. If there was such a thing the market would anticipate it before it happened, which would mean no Santa rally (as it would already be priced in before December).

  • Yes I put my entire 40k inheritance in in August so of course it tanked afterwards.

Considering I am mostly in 100% index funds I'm quite pleased with being about ten % down and am still buying smaller amounts each month. The way I put it in perspective it will take my under three years to put the same amount in at lower prices from my normal monthly pension and isa contributions so although annoying I'm not running for the hills yet

I did something similar, although not with inheritance. I opened an ISA with Vanguard in May, then maxed out the 20k yearly allowance as I moved abroad in July. Then I set up a similar account in the country I moved to and invested a lump sum of cash I had leftover. I've been adding a small amount every month since, but due to the timing and the larger amounts put in over the July and August, I'm currently down about 10% overall. Yaaaay.

Not the most encouraging introduction to the investing world, but given that I plan to invest a small but steady amount each month for the next 20-30 years, I'm hoping this is just a minor blip.

I would say, though, that the experience one has when first starting out can cloud one's opinion of the whole thing. A couple of my friends started investing maybe five years ago, and pretty much managed to double their money in that time. As for me, I would have a fair bit more money today if I'd just done nothing, which naturally makes me feel a bit pessimistic about the whole thing. I mean it's been nasty red numbers all the way so far, and the outlook for the next year or two seems pretty grim too.

And 47 is the atomic weight of silver, so clearly this thread is about commodity investments?

That's annoying. I am now putting our circa £5k per month of regular pension and ISA contributions into 100% equities as part of my plan to grow my exposure to 85/15 for early 2019 so it feels like I am 'saving' £500+ per month on the previous price.

I see City of London are increasing their gearing up to 12% to take advantage of reduced asset prices. I guess some of this happens natuarally (as the shares are now worth less compared to the debt) but some of it is a conscious decision to borrow more.

I’m glad you spotted that, on Wednesday the spot price of silver was $470 a kilo. Surely a sign to buy?

You are still persisting with your foolish idea that you are saving money because share prices are lower now than they were a few months ago. Markets are forward looking and they are looking forward to lower growth and higher interest rates in 2019.

No, better to wait for the Fourth of July...or the seventh of April if you are buying on the American market.
  • I basically look at my isa as part of my pension. I'm not stopping paying into my pension and put alot more in that than I do my isa so why would I do anything different with my isa
