"Huawei mate 10 pro" is overkill for "occasional photo and texts and a few calls nothing too serious"
Have a look at Huawei P Smart or Xiaomi phones in the same price range.

I got a Moto e4 for £70 and it is faultless. It will be much better than your iPhone 5. Argos currently have a Moto e4 plus at £99 which is even better.0

The greatest thing of iPhone to me is the long term software support, by contrast until recently Android device software support was quite awful. Google have attempted to improve the situation with the Android One Device, Google assists OEM vendors to support software upgrade in a timely fashion. Android One device does not have bloatware, which is very close to Google Pixel experience.
I would recommend the most successful Android One devices within your budget. Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite. Last couple of years, the smartphone hardware became fairly powerful, then you need to pay attention to software support and user experience. This budget Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite was released in 7.2018, and already upgraded to Android Pie 9, (UK release is expected to very soon ) This Android One device gets the latest security patch as fast as iPhone devices.
I Ditched My iPhone for the Xiaomi Mi A2 Lite! - You will know you don't need to spend silly money to get a decent smartphone at 2018.

Please also note Xiami officially started to sell in the UK from last month.
