How to restore vintage tile under bathroom vinyl??

Options
In the middle of renovating our new house, 1950s terrace and we're novice DIYers!!

Plumber discovered original thick and quite beautiful ceramic tiles under the vinyl bathroom floor (no asbestos, from the late 1990s).

So I've bought a heatgun and I've started to try and pull up the vinyl. It's not the most impossible task but it's hard work. The vinyl itself comes away fairly easily with the heatgun but the papery backing and adhesive is stuck quite firm. There's also some kind of leveling compound been placed on top of the tiles. Hubby going to try and remove some of the adhesive and compound with wallpaper steamer today....

Any thoughts? Tips on how to get this stuff off and restore the tile underneath? Or will I need to bring in the professionals?
