Car Tax confusion! When can I drive ?

Hi everyone
I’m due to get a new used car tomorrow and am entitled to 50% reduction off my car Tax due to Disability.
It says I need to send off a insurance cover note and the part of the log book that I need to send to the dvla.
Now it’s gonna take a week probably to get a cover note back and the log book needs to go to dvla, so my question is ;
Do I really need to wait so long before I can drive my car because of the tax ?
Please advise as I can’t find any info on it x

Yes. Before you can use the car it needs to be taxed.0

AFAIK DVLA haven't checked insurance cover notes for several years.0 -
https://www.gov.uk/financial-help-disabled/vehicles-and-transportHow to claim
You must include the following with your application:
a letter or statement from the Department for Work and Pensions that shows your PIP rate and the dates you’re getting it
the vehicle log book (V5C)
a V10 form
an original MOT or GVT certificate (if your vehicle needs one)
a cheque or payable order (made out to ‘DVLA, Swansea’) for 50% of the full rate of car tax for the vehicle
an insurance certificate or cover note (if you live in Northern Ireland)
Do not send your PIP assessment or any other medical information with your application.
If you’ve just bought the vehicle and it’s not registered in your name yet, you’ll need to download and complete a V62 form and include the V5C/2 new keeper supplement with your application.
Send the documents to:
DVLA

I think the best thing, if you want to use the car immediately, would be to tax it for a month if possible. It doesn't feel like this system works brilliantly for your situation but I also couldn't find any decent info0 -
My Dad is entitled to 50% PIP and a few weeks ago, my Mum (car is registered to her). Forgot about taxing it until the last day of the month, a call to DVLA said to tax in full, send off a note along with the PIP certificate, to claim half the rate back.
Few days later received a letter along with the PIP paperwork saying a refund is being sent and will be sent separately, then a cheque was received for half of the amount.0 -

Thank you all for your replies.
Yes it’s up to date DVLA info.
And no this system seems very awkward for anyone who has a reduction but wants to drive immediately. That’s why you buy a car isn’t it, surely ? lol0 -
Is taxing for a month a new option? I thought it was 6 months or 1 yearI am not a cat (But my friend is)0

There's two questions being conflated here...
Everybody who becomes the registered keeper of any used vehicle needs to tax it before they can use it legally. That simple, no exceptions. No change since tax discs were discontinued in 2014, and all keeper changes triggered a cancellation of the old tax and a refund for the old keeper.
You, as somebody who qualifies through receiving PIP, qualify for a 50% discount. Once the vehicle is registered as qualifying, then it's done automatically. Otherwise, you need to pay in full and reclaim. Makes no difference if you've just started to qualify, or just become keeper of a vehicle.
Again, been the case since PIP was introduced in 2013 - here's a 2015 thread... https://forums.moneysavingexpert.com/discussion/5337485
Was the discount available under DLA? If so, then the situation was probably the same then, too.0
