    Insurers are required to auto-renew.

I haven't seen any evidence to back this assertion up either.

I just renewed my insurance with The People's Choice (a stupid brand name which is just a sub-brand of Hastings Direct) and when I phoned up - having completed the application online - to cancel auto-renew, the HD representative told me that the policy did not auto-renew. Are HD doing something illegal in that respect?

One other thing I discovered as part of the renewal: If you leave it until the last day and want the policy to start the day after you apply, HD (and a lot of other insurers) bung an extra 5% on to the premium. For no other reason than they think they can get away with it? The HD rep had no explanation.
