It's important to diarise when your insurance is about to expire so you can shop around, anything else you only have yourself to blame.

    It isnt hard is it.

Do the same with any insurance policy whether car, breakdown, home & contents, could even do the same for the boiler service and MOT & service.

Use the old skool method of pen and paper if 1 likes.
Use the phones calender to add when certain policies are due to expire or note when you call them to get a new quote or tell them you will be leaving them.

Sadly we're seeing more and more people on here complaining and it's everyone elses fault but theirs when they have 2 home insurance policies or didn't lapse their policy

People have to take more responsibility with their purchases

Insurers are required to auto-renew. It's not some hidden scam or trick to fool you.

You can ask for it to be switched off from the outset if you prefer, but it was introduced following the requirement to have continuous insurance on your vehicle.

Could you clarify who requires insurers to Auto Renew?
    Many thanks

Hastings, my existing insurer refused to accept my cancellation request via email and never answered my question, why does it ha d to be by phone and they refuse to do it via email.
How would your insurer know it was you emailing them and not someone else? They need to verify the person before making changes to the account.

I have not had answer to this question
I assume that the "fact" that insurers are required to autorenew is made up

CIE doesn't mean insurers have to autorenew

Many don't! And all that do offer a way to stop it
  • I agree email is not a secure way to stop auto renewal, but why do you have to phone, why can't you log into your account and stop it?

I know the answer . . . it's to give retentions a chance to offer a better deal. I just tell 'em it's too late, I've accepted a cheaper quote elsewhere, no big deal . .

    Thanks for your rude answer
I however followed your advice and did look this up on the financial ombudsman's website
    https://www.financial-ombudsman.org.uk/publications/technical_notes/cancelling-renewing-car-insurance-case-studies.html
    I quote
In some cases, we find the insurer has changed over from auto-renewing a policy - to expecting their customer to contact them to renew. We’ll check the insurer took significant steps to highlight this to their customer.

This does nothing to change my opinion that you made up the fact that insurers are required to autorenew
It seems they don't even have to offer autorenew let alone being actually mandated to action it.
