Sorry I didn't describe it properly. There are 2 boxes Input 1 Signal Strength and Quality and 2 boxes Input Signal 2 Strength and Quality. They all show a long white rectangle with a small portion of blue on the right hand side which I presume means not very good!

I have just done the previously suggested pressing down the back up button to initiate an update through the Sky dish and nothing has changed so I will phone Sky in the morning.

    No, quite the opposite.

Try checking after you've switched to channel 4 or 5 (or any channel you can't get), you should see the bars down to the left (which is a weak or non-existent signal).

I feel so stupid for misinterpreting that. Also I was looking at the settings on the channels I could get and when I look at the signal strength for channel 4 it gives an empty box for Input 1 Signal Strength and Input Signal Quality, Input 1 Lock Indicator Not Locked and Input 1 Network ID/Transport Stream Null.

Input 2 Signal Strength and Signal Quality the white area nearly covers them with Input 2 Lock Indicator OK.
  • Thank you for this thread. I have had the same problem, tried all your suggestions, unfortunately they did not fix my problem but at least it meant Sky could not fob me off. Engineer is coming on Monday. Until then I have to use catch up on the channels that are not working. Will they need to give me a new box for free? If not other than cancelling the contract and going elsewhere, Virgin not an option in my area btw, any tips for negotiating a free box?

If it's a faulty LNB then they'll just replace that (it's the bit on the end of the dish) not the box itself.

I had a similar problem. Engineer came out and said the Sky Box "tuner" was malfunctioning and replaced the box. No problem since.

That could be interesting the dish is not a Sky one, there is a large dish on the side of the single story, three bungalow block that is communal. My neighbours don’t have Sky only Freesat and the lady is away who I could ask if she is having any problems, my Free stations on the TV are all fine, downloading programmes from channel 5 that is not working, is fine. Work around are a nuisance though.

Sky won't attend to a communal dish fault, you'll have to contact your landlord etc for that.
However, the Sky engineer should at least check all your cables are securely fitted and that it isn't your decoder at fault. If it is the decoder, he will change it for a reconditioned one as part of the price you've paid for the call-out. Did you negotiate a free call out?

Reference Channel 5 specifically it is not a free channel as far as cable subscribers and decoding boxes are concerned. Some companies have to pay Channel 5 to add it to the list therefore it is one of the first to go if you have cancelled subscriptions for example and also faults that need a valid card and decoder
