I'm with you cuppa I often feel like:D a grumpy old woman.
I hate this sort of sloppy speech particularly when people try to pass it off as a regional accent. And Americanisms too are another pet hate. Have you noticed how many posters have acquired a 'mom'? _pale_
I think they believe it's 'cool', I think it's ridiculous.0 -
My pet hate is when an answer to a question is started with 'So'0

I'm afraid the phrase 'doing my head in' particularly irritates me also
but yes, 'like' used in the worng context is another annoyance. 0 -
It irritates me no end too! My 15 year old daughter says it constantly and even puts it in messages she sends me!
At least her 16 year old sister picks herself up on it when she says it!0 -

Long-time lurker, but just had to join the forum to reply to Maman - hope I've quoted correctly!
Using 'Mom' instead of 'Mum' is a West Midlands thing. I don't know why or how it originated. It may have originally been because people heard it on American TV programmes, but it started years and years ago. I was born in Wolverhampton, and I've been using the word since the 1960s. It's really common here.0 -

Or even starting a thread with 'so'?
I'm like 'it makes me mad.'

Words, words, they're all we have to go by!.
(Pity they are mangled by this autocorrect!)0 -
I admit I do it, but I'm not sure why! I never end a sentence with like. What does bother me more is when people put "am" instead of "I'm" or when people don't know the difference between 'they're their and there' or 'you're and your.' Or when people say "I could care less" when the actual phrase is "I couldn't care less" if you could care less, then you already care :rotfl:0
