Has this insulation gone bad? Can I top it up?

Good morning everyone, just a quick question as im unsure what im looking at.

The insulation in my loft looks like it has a layer of grey substance and I dont know if its gone bad or is it jsut a really thick layer of dust built up over the years (bought house a year ago).

Can I top this up with a fresh layer of insulation or do I need to remove it and start from scratch?

I tried posting an image but its not allowing me .

I plan to put board it up by putting in stilts on the wood that runs along the loft floor too so that the insulation doesnt get squished down.

Looking forward to your tips and insight !

To be honest... I'm quite old ... and I've never heard of anybody ever removing any insulation... just adding more :)

I'd have noticed as there'd be remarks about people not having vehicles, or whether a tip took it, or whether it was recyclable... but nothing.

Just bung it on top I bet!
  • You know what they say, OLD IS GOLD!

I did feel that simply topping it up is the standard , it just looks really dirty and I wasnt sure if having all that dirt in between the old and new layers would have any sort of effect . The insulation doesnt look like all the neat and clean images you seen online, it is more like mud that has been patted down :)

It'll be just dirt on the top. If you want to post an image just add the link without the http and we'll do the rest.

I had mine removed. It was full of mouse tunnels, dead mice and mouse poo. And the odd dead bird as well. The process was very unpleasant (it smelled too - probably mouse wee). I know a number of people who have had this done.

It looks like dust. Lofts are supposed to be ventilated to prevent condensation and damp, this means a lot of dust gets blown in over the years. I'd just lay more over the top. Normally, the new stuff is laid the other way on, at right angles to what is already there.

Thank you for the response, will it matter if I lay the insulation on top and its not all one nice level all the way accross, like the perfect picture that the DIY stores have on their pages.

Professionally. There was lots of other work being done at the time, so it made sense to do it while the mess would just be part of a whole lot of other mess...
