Where do you get "Far Fetched Conspiracy Theories" from?
The entire point is about the protection of peoples data and protection from misuse of data. That is the simple concept? Do you think this isn't a serious subject? You think anybody who cares about privacy and data is part of some "Tin Foil Hat Brigade"?

Would you say that to the girl who has had her ex boyfriend blackmail her with posting up her nudes online or sending them to her friends and family?
What if she committed suicide because of it
Do you think people who are stalked or being harassed are part of the tin foil hat brigade?
There was a thread here by some poor woman who had some !!!!ed up debt collector knocking on her door recording her when she was just up out of her bed. Do you think she's part of the "Tin Foil Hat Bridgade", it caused her enough distress that she felt she should post about it here on MSE
Do you think the lady who lost her life savings to hackers who tricked her into sending all her money into their account which was all through deceptive practices is part of the tin foil hat brigade?
The list goes on and on and it's not conspiracy theories it's just the way things are.
Do you think the people who worked in the Iranian nuclear power plant that blew up and was caused by Stuxnet were wearing tin foil hats at the time? Caused by a computer virus.
Do you think the European Union created a new set of data protection laws because they all wear Tin Foil Hats?
Do you think everybody who is concerned about peoples privacy and peoples right to privacy and peoples personal data and who has it are all wearing tin foil hats?

i strongly disagree with anybody who thinks that.

Keep going mate - this stuff is gold dust.

Sadly though, it's hardly helping your case.

I don't have a case. I just am cautious with my data that's all. Touch wood I've not been a victim yet of data misuse or identity theft but I know a lot of people who have.

In which case, and banter aside, then you will appreciate that data misuse or identity theft can strike any organisation, be it your solicitor, or someone else. The fact that you're paying one party and not another does not mitigate this. Yes, you may get compensation from your solicitor if it does, whereas you may not from a 3rd party, but then the damage has been done, and a few hundred quid won't help much.

Equally true is that any information which is necessary to confirm your identity can be used to duplicate your identity - but equally someone could have always done that, as outlined in The Day of the Jackal - a loophole which was open for 30+ years. Unfortunately, KYC will increasingly be with us, so sadly the OP (and others) are going to have to get comfortable with it, because money laundering, financing of terrorism etc is just as much a reality as identity theft; and excessive railing against it can make certain transactions in life needlessly difficult if not impossible, and only to your own detriment. Being a hair-shirted martyr is one thing, but pick the wrong cause, and you're simply a luddite.

However, I do think people need to be more careful with their personal data than they are. At least they should do everything they can to minimise the possibility of their data being misused – and one of the ways of doing that is not giving away their personal details to individuals or companies, which can store it on their own systems (with the risk of hacking), or which have individuals who can use such data to their own advantage, etc.

I'm reminded of the woman I heard on a train quite recently, loudly giving out her bank account details over a mobile.

Many people appear to not be careful enough, and to think that it will not happen to them because 'something' out there will prevent it from happening.
