New carpet query

  • Is it a deep pile carpet because a friend had this fitted throughout (same colour) in her entire house and every room looked different,Different light and the way the pile lay changed the appearance considerably. It was hard to tell it was the same carpet room to room to be honest.I always decide which way I want the pile to lay when I get a sample and tell the fitter accordingly. That way I know what he end result will be.

Normally fitters will leave behind offcuts after fitting - do you have any? If so, you could take back to the shop and compare with their sample to see if they really are different - or not.

What kind of shop did you get it from - an independent or some faceless chain? If the latter you are unlikely to have much luck. Which is why I always use my local independent, as they care about repeat business. Not the cheapest but you get what you pay for.
For every complex problem there is an answer that is clear, simple and wrong.
  • Thanks all. It is a local independent shop that we have used before (and hopefully will again). The fitters took a sizeable off-cut back to the shop and we are waiting for the sample book to be returned by another customer. I am certain I would have noticed the issues from the sample. We deliberately picked the shorter pile to minimise denting/shading. In the meantime, we have not put our furniture back in the room in case the shop wants to take the carpet back. I really don’t want to get into a dispute with the shop but I can categorically state that we would not have picked this carpet if the sample had given us any indication of the shading issues. It looks ridiculous and I cannot imagine that anyone would knowingly buy this carpet.

Interesting. I recently bought 2 Afghan rugs. They look lighter or darker depending on which direction you are viewing them. When did you notice this about your carpet.?

If you get the sample back & they are indeed different, then the shop will get onto the manufacturer to get it replaced. If they turn out to be the same then I'm afraid you're stuck with it.
Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.

They had started fitting when I noticed the problem. If I stopped them then, we would be without a carpet over Xmas/New Year. Not viable with young children and people visiting.
That's not really their problem. You should have halted work there and then until it was established if the carpet was different to the sample or not.

I think this will rest on the sample/reality comparison. If they're the same, I can't see how you will achieve anything without paying for a different carpet.
  • its difficult to tell how a carpet will look in a full room
    same thing happened to us.

chose carpet from sample, brought a few samples home placed each on in room etc.

however, after it had been fitted in room, my heart sank as i saw it.
it was much much lighter shade than i thought i had chosen, we get a lot of light in the room as well .
i thought i had chosen a dark shade, but it was much lighter when it was laid in room.

    samples can be deceptive
    Nice to save.

To be clear, the carpet looks nothing like the sample. It looks iridescent so appears a totally different colour from one end of the room to the other. It also brushes a totally different colour, making it look like there is a thick coat of dust on the top from some angles. Had any of this been evident from the sample, we never would have chosen it. We took our time with the samples - we didn’t pick the carpet on a whim. It is not as described by the sample. Trouble is, this problem only became evident when the fitters had done half the fitting. I queried with them and we called the shop at that point. However, the fitters agreed with the shop to continue fitting (they were the ones who didn’t want to leave us without a carpet over Xmas, especially as it was half-fitted and they had cut our old carpet into pieces). Perhaps with hindsight I should have told them to stop fitting and take the new carpet up again but, having not been in this position before, I didn’t know what to do. We’re getting the sample back from the shop to compare to the laid carpet. I cannot emphasise enough how different it looks when laid to the sample. This can’t be right. We had the sample for a few days so tested it in all lights. We have a good relationship with the shop so hopefully this matter can be resolved. We are happy with their service but the problem is that the carpet is not as described. Consumer law dictates that we have to take it up with the retailer, not the manufacturer.

It will do. Our lounge/dining room runs front to back, with the dining room east facing and the lounge west facing. We used the same carpet and paint throughout, but the colours in both rooms appear to be slightly different. Even the oak flooring we have since had fitted in both rooms seems to vary in colour.

I am reminded of this optical illusion for how the same colour can differ depending on surroundings:
