That suggests a problem with how the course was delivered. Often those giving such courses make the mistake of assuming a basic level of knowledge and make assumptions of what the students will know and therefore don't cover it properly. You need to adopt the Dummies series of books approach and assume they know nothing at all, not even how to turn it on let alone what a menu or icon is.

My Wife and I signed up a few years ago at the local night school for IT 1&2 respectively. Both courses were more interested in the student being able to touch type rather than learning how to use computers.
