We don't save money to look at money (although a healthy bank balance is nicely reassuring!) - we save money so that when we need (or want) to spend money, we can improve our lives (and our houses and our families!) and our ongoing quality of life doesn't suffer for it.

And this is what I will be saying when I report a negative balance for February because I part paid for my frivolous holiday :p:rotfl:

True, Merlin's Beard, and easy to forget. Sometimes a few things can go wrong in a row and at that point it's such a relief to have the cash on hand to cover it and still know you've got more spare if anything else goes pear-shaped. Hey and frivolous holidays are good too!!:beer::rotfl:

Hi SF - sorry but this update for Feb was missed. Are you ok to add to the spreadsheet. Small gain but chuffed as I'd predicted a very small savings gain this month.😀
Sorry - it's on there now!

    Spreadsheet updated :)

Just in case you don't know, I also run a personal finance blog about frugal living. I thought I'd share with you that I have some printables available - there's an expense tracker and a NSD tracker to help you with your spending, if you want to take a look:

  • February Update time:
    (Number 148)

Another £500 stashed this month plus the £250 already done, £1.01 in interest on my TSB and £1.12 of interest in my Marcus account:

£752.13 total so far for February

(Also I've added £1 of interest for January that i hadn't done previously).
  • Just submitted my total for this month as payday is in the morning :j

Very almost hit 2k again but treated myself too a laptop this morning, justified by thinking I might make a spreadsheet too track what I’m spending and save more :D but mostly because I’m fed up of watching Netflix on my phone.

So total for this month is £1700.

Total for the year so far £3700 of 12k target.

Update to my total, thought it would be a better month and put me near the half way mark but unforeseen expenses haven't helped, declaring £2715.60

Declaring £775 this month which I'm pretty pleased with in the circumstances. The month was going great, with over £300 of additional savings, until Saturday's MOT... Happy that I saved for it during the year but gutted that £350 wasn't enough to cover the repairs and I had to take £200 from my hard earned savings  Never mind, it's still a good month!

And in addition to this I've started overpaying the mortgage with small change... We earn better interest on our savings accounts than we pay on our mortgage so not much incentive to overpay rather than save; however, I like the feeling of very slowly chipping away at it and potentially becoming mortgage-free a couple of months early. I'm not counting this for my savings challenge, but to give you guys an idea, this month was a whopping £4.56 :D
  • I am declaring exactly £500.00 for February. I am around a month behind schedule so far but I have a few less expenses in the following months so I should be able to save more!

  • Just added my savings for the month which was £1.8k which I am very happy with as almost double my "monthly" target. Few things lead to that with some overtime and some side hussles.

However I then bought an engagement ring for my now fianc!e which cost a little.... okay a lot more than that. I was tempted to take that out of my savings target but it was one of the things I was saving for and I still have my emergency fund.

Also invested £200 which for now I have added as a recurring investment in a low fund tracker. Not included that as that is long term retirement contribution.
