It's surprisingly quite a small difference between the no minimum term deals and the minimum 12 month deals, personally I would have gone for the slightly more expensive but more flexible deal from the onset, in fact I pay more per month for my Sky TV than is neccesary , so that should I decide to leave them , then it shouldn't present any problem.
As with most things knowing the future would be great, when you took the cheaper but minimum term deal you probably expected to be a customer for years and saving between £24-£48 per year in the process seems a no brainer, you took the deal , and the terms were published if you leave early, and now you have to leave, it's a bet that didn't pay off.
In some respects they don't have to justify why if it's only a couple of quid different between 'contract' and 'no contract' why the ETC is on the face of it is more punitive than it needs to be , but presumably Ofcom are happy that the £20/ month reflects their costs
I don't think anyone on here is making a 'moral' judgement on you, I just think most recon that you don't really have option but to pay, you could try asking them to waive the fee because of the unfortunate circumstances of you having to quit, but they are under no obligation to help
I understand Ofcom have dropped their investigation into Virgin's early termination fees with the agreement that Virgin will make it clearer their network does not cover the whole country and that early termination fees do apply
