who to ask if a house is rented?

    It's not the landlord's role to police the behaviour of their tenants.
    And if you do speak to the landlord, they may well go straight back to the tenant with "avi2 says...."

    Try Zoopla house prices. Look up your road and sometimes there is a house history with a photo of when it was last offered to let. I know this because I have seen them in relation to one our rental properties.



    You can get the owner from buying the title at the Land Registry.



    If the house is rented and the landlord is any good they should sort this out for you.

    Why would the landlord care? Clearly you don't know them, so your feelings are largely irrelevant compared to the £x00(0) they're getting every month

    Lie. Knock on the door and ask them if it's rented as somebody at work wants to move to the area and you were wondering if they could recommend the best local renting agent for them to check out.....

    Lies work.

    Has to be somebody from work in case you get dragged into a future conversation ... somebody from work is somebody you can be vague about if asked... "how did they get on?" "dunno, we work different hours" .... "not my dept" .... lies... work wonders.

  • Step 1 - Go onto the Land Registry website and pay £3 to get a Title Register for the property.

    Step 2 - Go to the local council offices and ask to look at the Electoral Roll for that street.

    Step 3 - If the Land Registry details match the Electoral Roll then the owner lives in the house. If the details do not match then usually the house is being rented by the owner to the person registered on the Electoral Roll.

    I used to think that landlords would want to know if their tenants were a nightmare and ruining the house they were renting and being anti-social.

    Now I know better, as you have said most landlords couldn't care less about the impact that their tenants have on other people. As long as the rent money comes in that is all that they care about.

    I'd suggest using Land Registry to check the details. Then have a look on 192 website and it may give you some information from the electoral roll, some is free but not all. You will have the name to search and address from the Land Registry but there's still a chance it won't show. Some landlords are registered with the council though, I would look into that too.

    I'm having neighbour issues and have done this. The problem I had is the landlord address is listed as next door.. they rent the house and now we have antisocial neighbours. I feel your pain.
