Drying washing over banister rails.

My wife is constantly frying washing on radiators and over the banister on the landing. I have recently noticed a lot of bubbling on the anaglypta wallpaper on the landing and the rooms leading from it.

The house is a 1930s terraced but it has been raining a lot in recent days which brings me to believe we have water seeping in from somewhere. The bathroom is the same where the paper seems to be bubbling all over and not just on the external wall. The paper is bubbling on the landing on the walls to both next doors.

I have been telling the wife for ages now that drying clothes on raditors isn't practical. She also dry's full bedding over the banister rail There isn't a moment where the radiators are free from washing. Could this be adding to the problem or is that the actual cause. I haven't noticed it this before now.

Regards Jeff.

Difficult to know without seeing the bubbles, but I doubt it.
Are you going to buy and electric tumble dryer, then the moisture will be vented outside?

    ^ oof!

Yes the constant water vapour from drying clothes will be causing high ambient humidity if you aren’t taking steps to remove it. Buying a basic humidity display would help you gauge the situation.
  • I always put washing around a radiator overnight if the weather is too bad to dry outside. It reduces the amount of time it needs to spend in the tumble dryer considerably (I rarely tumble dry for more than 20-30 minutes). But I put the items on clothes horses close to the rads, not actually on the rads (and therefore not directly next to the wall).

I find the trick is to turn the washing from time to time, so that both sides are exposed to the heat (a bit like making toast), and the washing doesn't hang around for too long. It's very simple, and should be something you can easily do yourself. You check the washing by feeling it with your hand - if it's still damp, move it so the dampest part is closest to the radiator. If it's completely dry, take it off the radiator and put it away.

Covering radiators affects how the heating works. Hanging it above the radiator works much better as it allows the heated air to move around the room. Opening a few windows once an hour to replace the damp air will reduce the drying time and the condensation.
I dry washing indoors with an electric fan which is cheap to run and dries quickly.

I rather like the smell of frying myself, but the oil would be damned difficult to get out of the washing methinks.

Do you have room/funds for a tumble dryer?

Maybe you could do all the laundry from now on and tackle the issue of drying it yourself. I assume you have an alternative solution?

If there isn't a moment when the radiators ar free from washing then she's doing too much washing or you are chagning your clothes too often.

How would you suggest that she dries this stuff?
