Clear varnished light oak door - what facings and skirting?

i think in 99% of homes, all woodwork (skirtings/frames/windows) should be white. no matter what color the doors are.
in the wrong house, anything else looks a bit naff.
Maybe it's a regional thing but most new builds here are all wood finish and I've known houses (one of which was 3 doors along from me) not to sell purely because it would be too time consuming and expensive to change all the wood to a natural unpainted finish.0 -
Thanks very much misgrace, your doors are lovely (as is the floor and furniture). I love oak.
The white does look really nice beside it, but I really still want a natural finish.
I think I'm going to see how expensive it would be to use oak facings and skirtings and maybe live on beans for 6 months, lol.
I have no idea what kind of cost oak is compared to pine.....anyone know?0 -
we were in a similar position as all the doors had to be changed as badly painted chipboard doors - couldn't afford the oak so had clear pine which we've treated with an anti-yellowing polyurethane varnish (not the high gloss varnish I hasten to add) but no way could we afford to replace all the skirting, door frames & architraves - so they've been painted white - which I suppose goes with the DG - & the doors are semi-glazed so plenty of light coming thru the beveled glass - the new alu-wood venetian blinds are the same colour as the doors so all -in -all it all tones & matches & I now like it - I was unsure at ist as I've always had white doors but the wood does look nice0

Hi, do anyone know where we can buy good quality but reasonably priced oak doors? I've not been able to find any in the price range of £40 to £60. most are a 100 or thereabouts.
grateful for help please.

I hmmmmm & haaaaaa about oak v white doors when I started in here.
I went with white (because its brighter) & matched the windows.
Anyway, you will NOT buy new oak doors for less than about £100 (though you may buy oak effect probably), can't be done & I looked at loads of different doors.
Settled on a 6 panel fire door from B&Q (about £80), I want to get upstairs done next, only 5 more doors!!!0 -
I got oak veneered doors with the oak lippings as Bespoke mentioned and they came in at about £80 and I'm a trade customer! They would have been £100 + VAT otherwise.
FWIW OP, I think you've already decided against, but having recently rented a house where they stained wood, it doesn't look very good, especially if you put it against real oak. Staining doesn't cut it, IMO. I think oak doors with white woodwork is absolutely fine. It isn't as expensive as oak and it will look far better than stainde pine. If your walls aren't magnolia, then a very refined look is to paint woodwork in a colour called Gardenia (which looks like Magnolia )Everything that is supposed to be in heaven is already here on earth.

Solid oak flooring is not only environmentally friendly but is one of the hardest wearing floor materials around.0

How many doors are you looking to buy?
Having researched the subject a couple of years ago, for the money I rate the Wickes Geneva doors as about he best. They have an engineered core but are very heavy and look really nice either with oak skirting etc or with white skirting.
Individually they are £90 each or £72 for 5 or more but a couple of months ago I got some for £60 each. You just have to take your time and keep a watch on the Wickes website.
