I believe that the default position on policies should be that the auto renew box is NOT ticked.

The majority of people renew with the same policy.  So, you are effectively asking for the minority option to be default.

I am currently in dispute with Sterling Insurance (also known as ‘Hertz’) who sent me an email confirming that my car insurance policy would not be auto renewed - then proceeded to take money from my credit card even although I’m getting a better deal elsewhere.

That should be a fairly easy complaint to deal with then.

I’m raging- so much so that I’ve created a petition to have this changed by law.

I suggest you calm down because its such a minor thing and if you are raging about that then you may wish to get some help for anger issues.

Not supporting it.  Whilst I am not a fan of auto renewal personally as I control my finances correctly, there are plenty of people out there who have awful money management and auto-renewal has kept them from making costly mistakes.   As the majority of people renew with the same provider, I am quite happy to accept the majority benefit from auto-renewal.
