Auto renewal

The best way the customer would benefit is when the insurer inform the customer that the renewal is due so that there is little or no chance of forgetting and get caught uninsured.
Mine does and the OP:petershare wrote: »This week they sent her(she is away at Uni) details of the auto renewal, priced at £360 -
It is so easy to forget or miss autorenewal.
Would be so much fairer if the insurer do not renew unlees they receive a written consent agreeing to the new premium.
Is it possible to opt of this scheme altogether?
When your insurance is due for renewal you will be sent information of the renewal price around a month before and this will say whether or not it will auto renew, every insurance company I have ever been with has done this.
If you find it easy to forget or miss autorenewal then you will find it equally easy to forget to insure your car so autoreneal protects people like you.
Autorenewal can be slightly annoying but I always cancel it if I ever have to contact my insurance company. It's not exactly a big deal and I'm happy to put up with it because I know it reduces the amount of forgetful uninsured drivers on the road.0 -
Nothing wrong with auto renewal, use your phones calender to note when said policies are due to expire and when to call up to cancel the auto renewal or to get a cheaper policy, its very simple.
If I do happen to forget or Im away over the period my insurance is up for renewal I just take the increase on the chin and just deal with it.0 -
I am not falling for the disingenuous sales talk by the insurance companies and their agents.
The primary objective of insurance companies is to increase their profits.
Their practice of finding loopholes and making presumptuous allegations, in the event of having to make a claim, are examples.
'Autorenewal' is another clever tactic that exploits consumer behaviour.
I will be impressed by an 'auto reminder' but certainly not by 'autorenewal'
There are apps where one can set alerts for all sorts of things.

Something similar for insurance would be very welcome.

You mean exactly how it is done at the moment.Importantly, the customer will then have the option and opportunity to shop around and find the best deal going or stay with the same insurer. The decision to purchase a product or service must always rest with the consumer.

It's made MSE £ millions in the process.0 -
If insurers did not have the auto renew process people would be whining because they forgot to renew & their cover had lapsed!
For any & all policies we've ever had it's not hard to say or email the words "PLEASE ENSURE THE AUTO RENEW OPTION IS REMOVED".
For goodness sake, are we all turning into complete numpties, grown adults need to stop needing a babysitter at some point in their lives.
I'd put money on it that half those protesting at 'auto renewal' don't even bother to skim through the policy.Seen it all, done it all, can't remember most of it.0 -
Lost money due to a mistake and then lambasted by a bunch of money saving edgelords. What a time to be alive. Don't people have a lot of time on their hands these days...
Anyway, Esure have just given me a full refund for my similar error, so kudos to them.0 -
I believe that the default position on policies should be that the auto renew box is NOT ticked. Those who want auto renew can change it. I am currently in dispute with Sterling Insurance (also known as ‘Hertz’) who sent me an email confirming that my car insurance policy would not be auto renewed - then proceeded to take money from my credit card even although I’m getting a better deal elsewhere. I’m raging- so much so that I’ve created a petition to have this changed by law. If you agree, please copy and edit the link below, and share on all your social media. Thank you to those who do.

Auto-renewal is here to stay and is seen as a good thing by the regulators because of the reduction in the above types of incidents that have happened as a result of it.
Are you also happy paying the extra £50 a year (as a random number) that insurers charge because rather than having to a call centre to respond to the 15% of customers that don't renew each year they must now have a call centre to outbound 100% of customers to see if they will renew or not.3
