did he reinstall, or copy the origional disk?. Thinking along the 'it is driver' and he re-installed? put the old disk in and copy the drivers off.

If you look for the touchpad in Mouse settings there might be an option to disable the touchpad while typing.

Still may be worth getting a mouse to see if that works (as per post 4). You can pick them up very cheaply.

Quite possibly. OP, you can find the drivers for your laptop here:

    https://support.hp.com/gb-en/drivers/selfservice/hp-elitebook-8460p-notebook-pc/5056942

Under the heading Driver-Keyboard, Mouse and Input Devices, you should find two Synaptics Touchpad Drivers. Download and install the latest one (Sept 5, 2017) and see if that fixes the problem.

My wife's Lenovo laptop had the same problem. As we both prefer to use a mouse (I have a desktop) my OH had bought a Logitech wireless mouse, which works from a very small USB transmitter plugged into a USB port on the laptop.

When the problem started, it was after a Lenovo hardware update, which updated the Touchpad. On a whim, I uninstalled the Touchpad, which was listed in Device Manager under "PS/2 Mouse". Problem solved!
I think this job really needs
    a much bigger hammer.
