Myths of gas central heating

40 years ago I designed and installed my gas central heating with hot water cylinder
The boiler was a balanced flue type. It consisted of a gas regulator operated by a simple closed/open electromagnetic solenoid valve and a safety thermocouple.
No parts needed changing in those 40 years.
A friend had a similar boiler but about 6 years ago it stopped. I checked it and found that the electric coil of the electromagnetic solenoid valve was inoperative. I phoned British Gas and they quoted £400 for a complete new gas regulator. I phoned a local boiler spares supplier and they said why buy a new gas regulator when you can buy a £10 electric coil. So I did. Don't be conned.
