blank gas and electricity meters
Options
Sorry if this is already a post, we switched from npower to Yorkshire energy about 2 months ago. We had smart meters for gas and electricity. I just went to read them for the first time since we switched, and they're blank. What does this mean? How can I tell how much energy we've used? tyia

ot means that your smart meters are early ones and unable to work with any supplier apart from the one that fitted it
welcome to the big con0 -
I disagree with twhitehouses cat.
Regardless of who supplies you should be able to read the meters themselves (not necessarily the In House Device in your kitchen)
It means that the internal battery within them has failed - ring your supplier as its their problem.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -
a common problem , both batteries failing at same time
perhaps the OP can comment on if it is the 2 meters or indeed the "kitchen" ornament0 -
In the pre-pay gas meters the display goes blank after a while to preserve the battery; presumably the smart meter equivalent does the same. Try pressing a couple of buttons to see if that brings it back to light.0

try pressing 9
I didn't think electric meters would blank0 -
Turn the leccy off at the wass. Turn it back on after a minute. Hit the reset buttonmake the most of it, we are only here for the weekend.
and we will never, ever return.0 -
ty for all the comments. I'd unplugged my in house device back in (had unplugged it when we switched, it didn't work great as it's not possible to get it anywhere near the meter itself which is on far side of garage) and it does still work, hadn't thought it would, and shows monthly KWh used which look about right. But meter readings look way out (I hope!!).
Pressing buttons on the meters does bring up numbers but not readings, as far as I can see, seems to scroll through lots of the kind of data on the device eg kgCO2 used last month, but so fast I can't see what's what.
So I need to call YE and see what happens about meter readings, but at least I've got some data and the meters are still working to some extent, massive phew, and thanks all! possibly shouldn't have panicked without checking further!0 -
Take your readings from the IHD (and put the IHD in the bin)
As Andypk say press button 9 if yours has a key pad like mine ( a horrible Liberty 100 meter) - on the Electric that brings up kwh; on the gas m3.
Now keep your own records as the meters are no longer Smart and enter them online.Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0 -

Have a look at the display panel on your Smart meter, normally it’ll be blank. Press button ‘A’ or ‘B’ to wake the screen up. Press button ‘A’ again to show the meter reading and make a note of the numbers including any zeros. There’s no need to note down any number(s) after the decimal point.
If you have a single rate meter: Always read the ‘R1’ register and simply write down the numbers from left to right.
If you have a two-rate meter: You’ll only need to read the ‘R1’ and ‘R2’ registers. Press button ‘A’ to cycle through the readings and write down each one as it appears.
If it’s peak time when you read the meter, the active register shows your Day/Normal rate reading. If it’s off peak the meter will show your Night/Low rate reading. You’ll notice that one of the registers has “Now” in the top right hand corner of the display. This shows your active register. How do I read my gas Smart meter?

Is there really anything wrong with still using the IHD to give a visual guide of daily/weekly/monthly usage, as long as people know they shouldn't rely on them for actual readings and need to take them directly from the gas/electric meters (and keep their own records of those readings)?0
