Tesco Credit card replaced - why?

I have a Tesco credit card (with a low credit limit) that is only used for internet and telephone purchases. in May 2017 I was contacted by Tesco who informed me that there was a fraudulent transaction on my card. When I investigated there were three transactions, two were in the USA. These were refunded

Tesco cancelled that card and issued a new one. The replacement card had a fraudulent transaction BEFORE I even received the new card. This was again refunded and a further new card issued.

Last week Tesco sent me a text saying that they has received information that my card MAY have been compromised and they were issuing a new one. I called them and they said information had been received, but would not tell me which organisation had given them this information.

The new card arrived today and is apparently active as I can see the details on-line.

I am concerned that having three cards compromised in just over 1 year may impact my credit score. A free credit check with Experian today shows that it is currently very good.

I am also concerned whether Tesco are particularly weak on security (card compromised before I even received it) and whether my recent experience is unusual. I have not had any problem with credit cards before last year even though I have had a credit card since the mid 60s (via the unsolicited issue of a card to Barclay's bank customers!)

Replacement cards aren't recorded on your credit history, so cannot impact the pretend score.

I would just be grateful Tesco are, if anything, overly tight on security alerts

You might want to review the types of places you're using your card online. Seems that at least one of them has poor security.

I've just had my credit card replaced for the same reason - unspecified potential fraud on my account. Its the 2nd time in about 5 years it's happened - a bit annoying as the number changes, but I'd prefer them to be alert to security issues rather than let something slide.

Tesco were fined £16m recently for the fraud attack against their debit cards. The regulator criticised them for not taking action when warned about the risk of a particular type of fraud by Visa.

It may well be that they are being over cautious now.

You haven't used your card at Currys or British Airways have you?

To be honest I think the issue is more to do with where you are using the card rather than Tesco.

  • The card in question has a deliberately very low credit balance so I am more comfortable in using it on the Internet. I have another card for normal credit card transactions which is never used on-line.

Being careful with my card or even blaming sites with slack security however cannot explain how my previous card was compromised AFTER Tesco informed me of the fraudulent transactions and had cancelled that card and BEFORE I received my replacement card or even knew the new card number. The Tesco credit cards are now all contact less and probably enabled for contact less payments.(although it has never left the house). The card number however could easily be read through the envelope.

My main card is not contact less and I will have to attempt to find another card provider when it expires as Tesco are refusing to provide me with a non contact less card in the future, I eventually got Debit card cards from Natwest and NationWide after many months of hassling them.

It may be that the transaction posted to the first replacement card was made on the old card before that replacement card was issued and simply transferred across, hence a second replacement when the further fraud was detected.

I recently had my pocket dipped on the metro in Porto, and cancelled my card very soon after the theft happened, a transaction i had authorised on the phone prior to the theft using the stolen card wasn't taken until the following day and showed up against the revised card number which the retailer would not have been aware of.
  • It’s impossible the new card that hadn’t been used had fraud on it.
