Bought a fridge freezer on a Gumtree.... it turned out broken

Hi
I bought a fridge freezer on a gumtree. Agreed that it will be delivered to the address of the property I am letting out. The seller agreed to deliver. My friend was present on delivery to pay cash.
The fridge arrived, taped and packed. We were told that it needs to stand unplugged for 24 hrs.
The next day when the tenants plugged it and unwrapped it and it was a broken inside. The tenants emailed me the day after the delivery, to tell me that the fridge is in terrible condition. However I didn’t see the email until Wednesday. As soon as I read the email I contacted the seller, who was rude to me and said if I contacted him the same day he would give me refund but not after 5 days! He stopped replying to my calls and messages. I only have his phone number. What can I do to get my money back? Thank you

Not much, private sale so it should have been checked straight away, no reason not to check it before it's left in the house. After 5 days it could just as easily have been dropped when being moved so not a lot you can do.

In a terrible condition or not working? Broken inside?

I presume dirty and broken shelves from the transportation?

Your friend should have checked it before handing over the cash.

100% about not plugging it in for 24 hours, I delivered a brand new one to a new build and the owner thought they were being helpful by unpacking it and plugged it in. Seems it made a funny noise for a short time before making a really bad noise and they died.

I used to say 8 hours minimum.

Get it cleaned/repaired or scrap it and buy a new one?

I’m glad I’m not your tenant.

Should read "then died", not "they died" I think. The machine died, not the tenants!:)

Freezers that are left standing in someone's garage may have worked when first put in there , but dont always respond well to being left in the cold.
can't believe you gave them a fridge without cleaning it first yourself.
