Three's Unlimited data SIM only use for mainstream internet via 4G modem/router
Hi all
Apologies if this has already been discussed but I have thought of something that may be too good to be true:
Three is offering a SIM only Unlimited data (+ calls and texts) for £20 per month on a 12 month contract.
My plan is to use this SIM card in a 4G modem/router as my main source of internet.
My questions are:
1. Does Three's T&C's prohibit the use of the SIM in a device other than a mobile? I can't find anything that says that you cannot use this SIM on a non-mobile device. They specifically state that tethering is allowed so I can't see any issues with this...
2. If the above is satisfied, is it likely that Three could apply data throttling (i.e. cap speeds) if I reach a certain threshold of data usage in a month?
3. Has anyone had any problems with using such a SIM card on a 4G modem/router, or has been successful in carrying out the above?
It seems too good to be true, especially when Three are advertising data only SIMS. Have I missed something obvious?
Thanks.

But be careful with the fair use policy.0 -

Providing it has a data allowance then any sim will work with in a router0 -
Haven't OFCOM and Three UK been working together recently because OFCOM weren't happy with Three capping Personal Hotspots etc?
My understanding, albeit limited, is that you previously received a text message from Three stating usage of SIMs in a modem weren't permitted if it was for a PAYM SIM (as an example) but I believe this is no longer the case.
Edit: OFCOM's investigation: https://www.ofcom.org.uk/about-ofcom/latest/bulletins/competition-bulletins/all-closed-cases/cw_01218It's not your credit score that counts, it's your credit history. Any replies are my own personal opinion and not a representation of my employer.0 -
Aha..perfect. That seems to imply that there should be no restrictions on using the SIM card in a 4G modem/router to then power the internet for the rest of the house through tethering.
I suppose the only problem would be to deal with user contention as this is likely to impact speeds.0 -
While the Black Friday phone sim offer (unlimited data, tethering, minutes and texts for £20/month) is excellent value and “should” work in a data only device, the flip side is there is nothing even close to it under Three’s data only sim offers. The data only sims are 40GB for £16/month (24 month contract) or £23/month (12 month contract). The offer is better than the old One Plan that cost £25/month (later £20) but was scrapped as it over used for data.
If all else fails, using a 4G phone as a hotspot will work fine. I’ve downloaded several GB over a 4G connection on Three using an iPhone SE, without any problems. The data rate is good on Three during weekday mornings, not so fast or reliable during the evenings when there are more users.0
