What is an xbox 360 arcade console like? Is it a lot better than a ps 2?

In terms of graphics, capability, future worth etc it's a lot better than the PS2, yes.

If you're set on getting a console then I think the PS2 may well be the best in your circumstances. They're cheap, thousands of games available, play dvds, and I've never met anyone who's played Buzz and doesn't love it.

If you'd prefer to go for something 'contemporary' then certainly the Wii would be your best bet. Nintendo are much more family and fun oriented than PS3 and XBox 360, and whilst I've never used the Wii myself, the 'wand' controller with it's motion-sensing adds an element that can't be got anywhere else at the moment (although the likes of EyeToy on the PS2 I think incorporate different modes of play to the traditional multi-buttoned controller as well).

If you've got a normal TV, get a PS2. They're not going to become obsolete anytime soon as Sony have announced a new version of the PS2 (slightly lighter) and 184 upcoming titles for the next year.

Add to that 10,000's of games on Ebay for a couple of quid a go and it's a winner. PS3/Xbox 360, because of the costs involved, are really for hardcore gamers IMO.

Just to be picky, the new version of the PS2 is actually going to be slightly *heavier* than the old one.

It will, however, have the power brick built in....

The 360 is becoming more fun, However I would agree that a DS would be best for young girls. It's neat and portable, not too dear and lots of famous people play them on the tele so it's OK for adults too!
I would imagine that no matter how Sony re-package the PS2 it will be obsolete soon.

It won't. There have been over 120 million consoles sold and over a billion games making it the most popular console of all time. Even Sony still expect over a million PS2's to be sold by April with 160 new titles released by March. With the massive installation base there is with the PS2 and the low development costs, games companies still regard it as worthwhile to make new releases for.

Last week, Pro Evo soccer 2008 for the PS2 was the top selling game of all formats in the UK.

In the USA the PS2 has sold 6 million more consoles in the last year than the 360, PS3, Wii, DS and PSP combined.
  • Do you have to play PS2 through your TV or, can you use your computer screen.

    All 3 consoles are great.
The Wii isn't aimed at gamers, its aimed at everyone as anyone can pick up a remote and wave it around even my 80+ year old Gran was bowling last Christmas my mum and dad also. the last game my dad played was tetris on the original gameboy. the problem with the wii is due to its popularity with everyone not just the gamers they are like rocking horse poo. not just the 20% of the population who play games. so yet it is a good choice for anyone who doesn't really play games.

PS3 new and stupidly expensive, yes the technology like bluray is very good to have but I still cant warrant spending so much money on one. the big advantage is that the PS3 can play the PS2 games as long as you don't get the cheap 40gb version so that could be a point to sway you from buying the PS2.

The PS2 is the best selling console of all time I believe and it is an awesome machine I still play on mine Gran Turismo etc. thousands of games and they are still being produced for it there is a lot of life in the old console yet. dance mats games, buzz and singstar gave the thing new life that nothing had really done before. defiantly smiting to consider.

The xbox 360, I have one its brilliant graphics sound etc but if I was buying a gamers console now I would go for the PS3 not the 360. most of the games are first person shooters but there are games like guitarhero to rock out with but that is also available on the PS2.

So I would buy the Wii, then a PS3 then the PS2 then an xbox 360

The wii isnt impossible to get hold of if you know how to get them I have had 5 in the last 3 weeks bought from local game stores. and there is the amazon.de method.

The Wii is great fun. My son saved up and bought himself one when they first came out. I never knew I could be so competitive. When I was boxing I gave it my all. I really wanted to win (and it's so tiring!! :o )

But as you say, they're pretty rare and more expensive than the PS2. I think the PS2 would be fine, especially as you get the dance mat games and the like, and the chance of cheaper games off eBay.
