There's a useful list here:basketcase said:Does anyone know of a list of foods that are OK to ignore when OOD (unless, as you say, the bugs have moved in!) and those you really shouldn't use? Fish, obviously. Do nut products go off - if so, how?Maybe one for the Cost of Living thread? Or the no food waste?

Anything with oil can go rancid [sesame seeds, little bottles offlavouried oil] , anything with cream can go off, although I had a pot of zero greek yoghurt in the fridge for nearly 7 months before I finished using it. It was fine. It's a good fridge though..or it's position is good..Rice, pasta, oats, barley, polenta, dried lentils, peas and beans should be ok but older beans will break up more. Some dried stuff can go off though if it's exposed to excessive mositure, it gets what we used to call a cupboardy taste. You can taste it's off, but not really smell, so sometimes it's a gamble.Non me fac calcitrare tuum culi7

You can freeze nuts and nut flours, haven't tried to freeze pin nuts but i imagine you could?Life shrinks or expands in proportion to one's courage - Anais Nin9

I've frozen pine nuts and they were fine.7

Yes you can freeze pine nuts, and any other nuts. I always freeze opened packets so that they don't go rancid and have to be thrown out.

I think luck plays it's part with this one. We don't suffer from a slug problem with the potatoes. We do grow them in big old potato bags, rather than on the ground, but even them I've known others to have slug problems when they've grown in similar conditions. I don't know why we don't yet that issue, and others do.Si_Clist said:
I don't get this. Why aren't they all slugged? What's your secret? In 30-odd years of determined tatey-growing, we've only once had maincrop spuds without slug damage and that was when we made the big mistake of growing Golden Wonder. (They cropped like mad but had the consistency of cannon balls, so we assume the slugs gave up and found something easier to eat.)elaine241 said:... I have loads of potatoes still in the ground from last year. I dug up some and they were fine, not starting to sprout and tasted lovely.
Nematodes help a lot and are worth the expense for us, but even then we still get some sluggery going on ...February wins: Theatre tickets6 -
Well some had a bit of slug damage but not a lot. They had blight too but then again only a few of the spuds had any damage and they got thrown to the hens. I have probably got about two-three sacks worth of spuds. There are red, white and pink fir apple. As for my secret, there isn't one! Last year was difficult for me and my veg patch got totally neglected and left. This is the first time I have ventured back into it to dig it all over and start again. It is in a walled former pig yard, big area so other half dug it over with the mini digger using the riddling bucket ( holey allows soil through but not stones and large plants such as stingers) . There were loads of spuds, Chinese artichokes, runner beans dried in the pods over winter and some onions/garlic that have re-sprouted. Other half used to grow potatoes commercially so is very against me using the surviving potatoes as seed, even though a few have sprouted. He maintains they have blight spores on them and will lead to blight again. I may accidentally drop some in the soil and see what happens!Si_Clist said:
