Agree mar. All these traumatised mums day after day! Good job they weren't around in the Iron Lady era.I've given up reading the rag that covers this NW region. It's full of Traumatised mums , crying children and Parents who "accidentallly" forget their purse or wallet with distrught children who are rescued by another kind customer who refuses any repayment.I can't believe people are so inept more they've found a good way to get some poor samaritan to fall for the sob story. Then they run to the press for their five minutes in the spotlight.Another angle is a young child who's been sent to the shop by mum. Manages to fill a basket full of stuff but has lost the money when they reach the till so step forward some kind customer who pays and once more doesn't want paying back. It's either fake news or there are some very good con merchants around now.Doesn't bode well for the future. Fagin would have been operating this way with his boys if he was around today. It is better to light a single candle than to curse the darkness.

A long while ago when I worked in a bookshop, a group of artists met in the upstairs rooms. One suggestion for the name of the group was 'Chip Pan Blaze' on the grounds that they would get free advertising every week in the local rag. A lot of the 'trauma' etc is down to the way the 'reporters' write the stories (misreport) and the way they instruct their subjects to 'pose'.
Harking back to an earlier discussion (without wishing to reopen old wounds) the language they use, particularly for women - 'battling granny', 'mum of five' (thinking about that high powered executive who was suing for discrimination some years ago - Nicola Horlick - apparently she had 6 children but the eldest died at the age of 12). Excellent qualifications and career but every article mentioned the children - usually as a stick to beat other women. As she herself said, she wasn't Superwoman, she had loads of paid help - superwomen (if anyone wanted that title - the Shirley Conran book is 'Down with Superwoman') were the ones with children, full time jobs and who did the domestic stuff as well.
Many apologies for the diversion - that's just the way my mind works (or doesn't) these days. I made a mistake on an order about a month ago and ended up with many many tins of tomatoes (bargain price from Icyland). They are all safely stashed in the shed as I'm trying to audit what is in the house before bringing newer stock in. What's in the house is low (in number and literally - it's one layer in the bottom of the wardrobe and a couple of cupboards in mum's room. I did manage to get down low enough to look at the ones in my wardrobe without actually having to get down on the floor
Thinking I might bring some tomatoes in (they had the sense to send them with the cardboard and shrink wrap overlay, although a few had broken) and use them as a base layer, so that the things I want to use up are higher up and more easily accessible. The original cupboard I used in mum's room (named the Soupery because she had a tin of soup most days and it was something she could get herself on her good days) had about 7 or 8 layers (I cut cardboards to fit) and was stocked up in Autumn to see us through.
Just have to work out if I have the time and energy to do it now, as there are several other things I need to do - including condensing about 12 pages of scribbled notes into a coherent list for my face to face with the doctor tomorrow. It would save a lot of time/ hassle in the future if I could do it (even just my wardrobe). On the other hand, if I run out of steam. No it just doesn't bear thinking about.
Love all the prepping talk, I'm only a novice (think I've got non-perishable food and medical/ first aid covered and the shed is now cold enough to keep drinks, veg and part baked rolls there again). My mission in life is not only to survive, but to thrive and to do so with some Passion, some Compassion, some Humour and some Style.NST SEP No 1 No Debt No mortgage13 -
Discovered a gap in my preps yesterday after getting a rather deep cut in the "web" between thumb and forefinger - steri strips. Went to local pharmacy but they didn't have any so made do with plasters and elastoplast tape. Not ideal because as soon as I stretch my thumb it pulls the cut open but better than nothing.
Will pick some steri strips up as soon as I find somewhere that sells them. Also need to add antiseptic cream as I have opened the last tube now.16 -

Hello all. I've been following this thread since it's inception but this will be my first post.
Brief introduction. We're a household of two - I'm in my 60s OH in his 70s. Up until earlier this year when my dad passed away, I'd been caring full time first for my mum and then my dad for the past 14 years. We live in a house that's now far too big for us and though we plan to, we can't move for another year or two.
I've been prepping for years but in a smaller way than I do now. Our age, my health, inflation, the very broken supply chain etc etc has made me realise I need to do much more. We have good savings, we've always been careful with money, but only have state pensions and I still have a couple of years before mine kicks in. So the decision was made a year ago that money left in the building society is money decreasing in value and we'd be better off investing some of it. In food! (Actually everything household from lightbulbs to toothpaste). I have a canner but only now learning to use it and I have a freeze dryer on order, as my aim ultimately is to be prepared for the long term. Happily my sister is of the exact same mind as I am and we're able to help each other - though we live on opposite sides of the country. She's an experienced canner for instance.
I've learned so much from this thread over the years and would like to be able to contribute to it although my experience is way down the scale of most of you here.28 -
