As a fan of corned beef, I also try to recycle the keys as if there is much more disheartening than having a can you can't get into (without additional tools) it usually involves wet clothing as well as hunger.
:j Aha! I had put the (unused) key into my little pot of metal for recycling as I use the can opener at home, but I might just whip it outtta there and add it to the camping supplies. Ta for the good idea.

    :( What a b*mmer, Pyxis.

Flours are relatively shortlived esp wholemeal but you can keep them in the freezer in placcy bags/ tubs, presupposing there is adequate freezer space. I lost several bags of delicious nutty stoneground organic windmill flour when a water leak from one flat up and one flat over caused damp in my kitchen cupboard. Have re-organised the kitchen so that cupboard only holds crocks/ things stored in glass jars with those rubber gaskets.

Re nuts, I keep mine in the fridge, they can also be frozen.

Been playing in the dirt on the allotment and have done a little shopping, adding a can of corned beef, to replace the one I opened today. Other than that, nothing preptastic to report.

Well! I never knew you could freeze flour and nuts! Thanks for that! :T

Do you happen to know roughly how long they last in the freezer?

Talking of keeping corned beef tin keys, I have a number of those allen/alun keys you get with Ikea furniture, collected over the years.

A lot of them are the same size, so surplus to toolish requirements.

Any ideas what I could do with them?

  • A good set of Allen keys is a useful thing to have in the garage, but there is no need for more than 2 of the 5mm keys. They're the most common size, so the one that is always missing when you need it.

Get some nice T handled Allan keys, fixing things is so much better with the right tools

I found our small supply of Storm matches today whilst tidying up and decluttering. They've been safely stored with the other Brexit stuff. I knew we had some *somewhere* but hadn't managed to find them, so it's great to get my hands on them again!

Extra Allen keys can be taped into welcome to your new home cards, along with tin opener corkscrew & local takeaway menus. Very Well received!

I bought some storm matches last week (felt like such a grown up!) and am gathering other emergency supplies. I've got an igadgitz wind up/solar/usb radio waiting at the post office (best price is ebay £15.99) and torches/led lanterns are next on the list, be great to hear any recommendations :)
  • Ikea made a fab solar reading light called SUNNAN which is no longer current in the shops but often found on E.Bay. Fab things which I charged once in full sunlight and now they live on a light windowsill and are always ready and charged to go. They give light to read/work by and although as with all solar appliances the light gradually lessens as the charge of the battery runs down ours, when we've used them, are still giving out light after a 12 hour 'on' period. The current Ikea solar lighting range is called Solvinden and also works we'' but the Sunnan lamps suit our needs best. We've never found a wind up lantern or torch that works properly or for a long period without hours of winding.

:) Nuts should be good for a few months, Pyxis. Flour benefits from being frozen for a few days, even if you don't intend to store it in there as it'll kill the larvae of any pantry pests which might be lurking in there. HTH.

Due to a completely random set of circs, I found myself in an army surplus shop this afto. As you do. 'Twas a close run thing but I escaped without buying anything. Great preptastic browsing. ;)

Oh those places have all sorts of handy stuff, all expensively designed, rigidly production controlled & then sold to civilians for penny rates. Baffling, but dear heavens preptastic & ideal for the gardeners, the fast growing teenagers, plus Anyone "hard on their clothes" & who doesn't mind some odd-ish looks.

Says she with a DPM anorak that fends of weather & brambles, all sorts of Out With Scouts tackle and even Other Countries stuff (I couldn't afford a real wool full length overcoat til I saw it in a surplus store, not realising what charity shops had then & anyway preferring the frankly double-take triggering garb.)

If you ordinarily eschew these places, just venture in and have a looksee. (Much as I did that "Jacks" knockoff Tesco supermarket - it helps to have eyeballed the place to form an informed opinion. The lemon fool & the cheese is wonderful. The rest I can absolutely leave, but since the "middle aisle" stuff churns at a heck of a rate, it *may* merit repeated checking.)
