Blue, you kept that little gem under your hat, didn't you?
For anyone not in the know, Blue and I have a fine line in subtle and not-so-subtle insults.
But we love each other really.I believe that friends are quiet angels
Who lift us to our feet when our wings
Have trouble remembering how to fly.12 -
Floss said:Actually, while they have different strand composition, they are both RNA viruses, and are quite similar in genome structure and both are RSV.
So there are real comparisons. And both mutate.
Sounds posh, good job google is on hand for acronyms....oops, good job google is around to point out to me that they are initialisms not acronyms..Golly gee, my vocab is expanding every day.

I never learnt Greek, but did do a year of Latin.
According to a news article this morning, Epsilon is indeed the fifth letter of the Greek alphabet, but there is already a strain of Covid that has been given that name. In fact, and I didn't know this, there are ten strains of Covid doing the rounds and they have all been named after letters of the Greek alphabet. Consequently the next variant that surfaces will be named after the 11th Greek letter, Lambda.
There, you didn't know you wanted to know that, did you?One life - your life - live it!15 -
Thanks for the update @Nargleblast. It's much less emotive to refer to things using the Greek alphabet rather than 'Kent' or 'Brazil' or 'South Africa' which all feel open to promoting xenophobia/nationalism and uncomfortably close to Trump's 'China Virus' comments.
I now have a year's supply of elderflower cordial for my niece, and am close to have supplies for myself and my mum plus gifts sorted if the tree continues to oblige! My tomato/aubergine/pepper factory is coming along nicely, chard is aiming for world domination, beans are getting going, strawberries contemplating becoming edible and salad doing well. Carrots are a bit slow, and radishes have been sulky, but are hopefully getting over it...14 -

What is the definition of preparedness? I guess each of us has a different one and for some it's having supplies, for some it's having skills, for some it's having a plan should a possibly disastrous situation arise in their lifetimes and for some it's a combination of all three and much more. My preparedness also has in it keeping abreast of developments and trying to assess their impact on my life and possibly my future, it's looking at small bits of change like a new variant and trying to look ahead to possible problems or changes that might cause to happen. Of course they might not happen and the things I flag for interests sake may have no effect on anyones lives but then again they may change the ball game, I don't have the ability to look forward to see so when I read of new variants etc. that have been flagged up in the media as possibles it's just an information passing on act to post them here in case they have been missed. These little snippets are usually in the small 1" articles in the paper and not many people take a newspaper these days. Of course if it's not acceptable to the 'preppers' who post here I'll stop flagging things up and keep anything I find to myself but I appreciate it when others do post information here as it helps give a fuller picture of what's happening. So, do you want the information collectively or not? I don't mind either way but I'd hate to be annoying on purpose.10

Carry on, I don't read newspapers, maybe the guardian online occasionally, I keep a tally of the daily infections in my area and have seen it ramping back up again over the last couple of weeks [been doing this since last July which is kind of nerdy sad] . A little bit of information is always helpful even if it might seem not immediately. I'd like ot think none of us on this thread are panicky type of people who would immediately do a chicken licken if someone said something that may or may not be completely and exhaustively in context but would have the wherewithal to go and check for themselves.

I've always been of the mind that as much information as possible on any subject leads to being able to make clearer and better choices in life, not everyone wants to know ahead, but we find it helps with planning in all areas of life. The DDs say we are control freaks but we just like the possibility of being in charge of our destiny as much as any single person can be. We've never been of the 'head in a bucket of sand' persuasion but maybe some folks are just happier not thinking about the future and are just happy to let it happen, who knows? I'd hate to give false information knowingly and I'd hate to be thought a fearmonger so I've always popped on things I find for the first time in the paper as I find them, just information not scaremongering for sensationalism...people can chose to read or not, act or not all I do is flag up what I find if I think it might have relevance to prepping.8
