Yeah, I remember the time my mother (a trained first aider) had been called on by the next door neighbour whose OH had had a massive heart attack. He was blue from the jaw upwards by the time the alarm was raised, Mum did CPR while the doctor and ambulance were on their way.
Mum and Dr worked together until ambulance crew could take over. Mum bust one of his ribs. Dr said it didn't matter, if he'd made it (he didn't) it would have been the least of his problems.:(
My First Aid Instructor said that ribs heal, death doesn't.
And that the rarest result of all is the person surviving. He told us that it's better for a first aider psychologically if we go into it thinking 'this person is already dead', as they effectively are all bar a bit of brain activity - if they're already dead in our minds, we were less likely to feel guilt for 'not being able to save them,' but we could feel that we did everything to give them a chance of a miracle when the experts get there. And to book counselling straight away, even if we felt alright at the time.
I've not been in a situation where I've had to do it, but a friend had to when his father died and said (with the help of a bit too much booze) that what haunted him was the sound of his ribs on the first compression and that he thought he had failed. I told him what I had been taught and he seemed to find it reassuring.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll0 -
Yes,it is possible for someone to stop breathing whilst their heart is still going, but remember a respiratory arrest will be closely followed by a cardiac arrest if the respiratory problem isn't sorted pdq.
Where that article was wrong is that it did not mention the fact that you must also check for a pulse as well as checking for signs of breathing. The carotid pulse is easier to find than radial, but don't go squeezing both carotid pulses at the same time because you could cause the heart rate, if it is beating, to plummet.One life - your life - live it!0 -
Remember I was speculating about Alexa ordering stuff you didn't want? I just found this hillarious video that has some naughty children ordering toys on their parents' tech:

My DH tried to do a shopping list via Alexa and had to give up in the end. Since when does " Sweetener " sound like "sand pipers" :eek:. By the way if you have one, ask her to play " baby shark " that tune will stay in your head for days :rotfl:( ours is linked to DD's and the DGC can ask their Alexa to play it on ours, bless them
)
Did a stock up shop today, got a bit twitchy as I didn't have enough toilet rolls... we do now :jFailure is simply the opportunity to begin again, but this time more intelligently0 -
Just to add my son had total heart failure a few years ago - he's absolutely fine now but came out of hospital with 2 broken ribs from when he was in resuss. Even he said it was better than the alternative!Small victories - sometimes they are all you can hope for but sometimes they are all you need - be kinder than necessary, for everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle0

Blimey silvasava, that must have been a terrifying time!
My First Aid Instructors have been on the same page - better a beating heart & broken ribs than a perfect ribcage on a corpse. They were pretty robust about the odds too but were clear, try it anyway.
I understand the lamentation that the elderly can be thugged into edge of life but as my instructor puts it - who wants to live to 93? Ask the 92 year olds!0 -

The pound shop this morning had the Dolmio stir in pasta sauces at 50p each as part of their Veganuary stand, I got 4 as they are rather yummy and will get more next time I'm in the city if there are any left, they're normally a couple of pounds so it's a good offer. I think it was Poundland!0

GreenQueen the Bonners brand is apparently owned by the canners who do all sorts of goodies for all the good SMs. When there is an excess or the order is changed the same goods are tinned and sold under the Bonners label. Before I went plant-based I ate a lot of the soups and also things like the goulash. I have never had a bad one.Solar Suntellite 250 x16 4kW Afore 3600TL dual 2KW E 2KW W no shade, DN15 March 14
