I bought some disposable face masks today and was horrified at the price. They are a pack of 10 three ply ones in Lidl at £7.99 and are to be worn for just a day. I find this rather expensive and will almost certainly have to make some which can be re-used. I do have a box of the gloves but rely on hand-washing really. I have a lifetime's supply of posh soap bought from car boots over the years. What is everyone else doing in preparation?Solar Suntellite 250 x16 4kW Afore 3600TL dual 2KW E 2KW W no shade, DN15 March 14

I was going to be planting berry bushes (husband insists can't plant anything serious til next year after garden double dug - ahem!) but then ricked my knee. I will be repotting my blueberries now the ericaceous compost I bought online has arrived (garden centre wholly sold out). Why penny failed to drop with husband seeing devout gardeners out even masked & distanced in the rain I do not know... <contemplating mallet & thinking drawbacks>15

jamanda said:Prepping is a bit of a challenge when the supermarket either don't send you what you have ordered or send something else completely out of the blue which you have never even considered, noticed or like. I imagine the order pickers are under pressure but someone, somewhere, has a sense of humour.

That is an interesting one. And I only got sardines. For some reason when they run out of dried peas I get sent red lentils, and I have an interesting collection of coffee. DH only drinks one sort, and I only drink one other apart from emergencies when we will drink anything wet.12

I strongly suggest you avoid anything by Vanch (procedural masks). Poor quality, the ear straps will pull from the mask at the lightest tug. A huge part of the shipment my hospital received smelt mouldy, you know the smell you get when you've put something away damp. The smell was so bad that entire wards refused to wear them forcing our provincial government to air them out before distribution.
The Vanch masks have also caused facial rashes and other types of skin irritations among those of us unfortunate enough to have to wear them throughout our shifts.
Have a google at mask production in China. Truly horrific. Made by men in bare feet sitting on concrete floors while they cut the strips. Nothing at all sanitary about them.

Nothing at all sanitary about them.I've been wearing my home-made cotton & fusible vilene shaped masks in public for 3 months now, washing after one use. It's working for me, and it used materials which already owned.
Every increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

Our market is now open and you could hardly get near the fabric stall for women poring over the quilting cottons trying to choose mask fabrics. Sadly, the chap on the haberdashery stall won't be back for a couple of weeks so fusible interfacing is the new loo paperIt doesn't matter if you are a glass half full or half empty sort of person. Keep it topped up! Cheers!16

Can anyone please recommend a pattern/construction method for a fabric mask which actually fits a human-shaped face and doesn't look like it was made in a hurry by a five year old Blue Peter viewer? We have fabric, thread, a choice of sewing machines and even some knicker elastic, but not a sensible pattern.ETA - I just asked my Lady Wife when girls stopped wearing knickers held up by proper knicker elastic threaded through the hem at the waist. She's guessing late 1950s but is now also wondering, so what's the answer? We're all doomed15
