Hi,
Legal and General have just refused me life insurance for my mortgage because I had cancer 17 years ago. I have been free from cancer ever since and my consultant is sure it will never come back. I'm very upset that I've have been refused Insurance.
Has anyone had this? Can anyone recommend insurance for cancer survivors? Can I appeal?
Thanks for any help...

There are a number of specialist insurers that will consider cases like yours. Mostly available via IFAs and whole of market protection advisers.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). The comments I make are just my opinion and are for discussion purposes only. They are not financial advice and you should not treat them as such. If you feel an area discussed may be relevant to you, then please seek advice from an Independent Financial Adviser local to you.0

Thanks for your response, has any one had luck with a particular insurer. Does any one know if I can ask to see the report legal and General made about me,?0

Legal & General didn't make a report about you. Your GP would have made the report, L&G would have just interpreted the information presented. Your surgery is supposed to keep a copy of any reports sent to insurers for 6-months, however, most surgeries don't. If your surgery hasn't kept a copy on file you can always ask L&G to send their copy back to the surgery.
Just because L&G declined to offer cover doesn't mean that all other insurers will. That said, an insurers ability to offer cover will be dependent on the type and staging of the cancer and whether there has been any significant side effects from the treatment you had. Certainly, it being 17-years since you were clear is going in your favour so hopefully another provider would be able to offer terms.0 -
Thanks for the response, I've made a complaint to l&g and they're re considering. In the mean time I'll do some research on other providers..0

Why? The insurer is allowed to decide who it wants to insure. You don't meet their criteria so they won't offer you insurance.
If you went to the supermarket to buy a product, and they didn't sell it, would you complain to the supermarket? No, you'd go to another supermarket that did sell the product.
L&G will almost certainly reject your complaint. Even if for some reason they upheld your complaint, the price would be likely sky high to reflect that they don't want to insure you.
Take dunstonh's advice. You'll find me sat in the corner with a pack of dry roasted and a Guinness.1 -
Yes, from experience it is based on the GP report. I had an issue and the IFA wasn't sure if I would get cover, but he put the application in none the less. L&G wrote to the GP who confirmed that it was unlikely to reoccur, and the cover was granted.0

Really sorry to hear this as it's not fair to be treated like this.
Legal and General focus on cheap premiums with a clean health record.

To be fair, there is nothing that has been said on this thread that suggests that the OP has been treated unfairly. its more akin to shopping in the wrong place.I am an Independent Financial Adviser (IFA). Sadly it also depends on the underwriters appetite at the time, friend's wife had breast cancer 6 year post diagnosis in the clear, already have life insurance with L+G 1 year ago for 250k.
Tried to get a top up this year for another 250k via Zurich/L+G, they loaded the premiums to 200 month for 2 years. No change in medical history
This was via a whole of market broker too"It is prudent when shopping for something important, not to limit yourself to Pound land/Estate Agents"
