When I had low value cars I usually went for fully comp (cheaper, usually comes with windscreen cover) and the highest possible excess (brings the premium down a bit). It's irrelevant if the excess is £400 or £1400 when the cars only worth £300; I wouldn't be claiming anyway.

Precisely. And you don't pay excess for 3rd party claims against you anyway. :)

OP, I'm with LV but not had any reason to call them or make a claim. They were recommended to me by a colleague who has claimed through them and said they were good to deal with. If you go with the cheapest quote with a low rated company, the risk is that you have a load of hassle if you ever have to make a claim, or have any issues where you need their CS. As I haven't claimed from my insurers for about 15 years, I usually take that risk.

If you are quoting with you as a named driver, try taking yourself off the quote.
It's not always a sure fire saving, but often adding a male named driver loads up the premium.
Where adding a female to a male policy as a named driver often reduces it slightly.

If you've your own fully comp insurance, you'll usually be covered driving it 3rd party on this, but check your policy, not all fully comp polices cover this anymore.

Our eldest is a newly qualified driver and saved £1000 by adding his mum, when he tried to add me it was only £550, adding both was still only £550, so we didn't bother with me.
I can still drive it 3rd party on my insurance, but I wouldn't be seen dead in it!

Unless someone makes the mistake of choosing one of the few insurers where excess is payable on all claims.

I've used LV for years, just made a claim for an at fault accident and it was all handled very well. Slightly more involved because I didn't want to use their approved repairer, but nothing to complain about.

Remember that people doing online reviews almost always do it because they're angry, I'd take the 1.5* with a pinch of salt unless you see the same sort of comments on all of them

Sam Vimes' Boots Theory of Socioeconomic Unfairness:

People are rich because they spend less money. A poor man buys $10 boots that last a season or two before he's walking in wet shoes and has to buy another pair. A rich man buys $50 boots that are made better and give him 10 years of dry feet. The poor man has spent $100 over those 10 years and still has wet feet.

  • A big thank you to all who replied. So much helpful information guys. Really allayed my fears about LV. I have finally gone with them, by far the best rate.
    Thanks again all...
  • Use the cheapest of the main stream insurance companies, just avoid the ones no one has heard of like A-Choice and Go Skippy to name a few. They act like it's still 1979 and everything has to be done by paper, even as far as requesting photo copies of licence through the post etc.
