Poorly rated cheap car insurance

We have a 14 year old Audi A4 (2 previous owners). The car is in great condition and my wife is happy driving it so we're not looking to exchange anytime soon.
We're currently with Admiral insurance who gave us a quote of 1600 for renewal. Shopping around I found a quote of 840, amazingly from Admiral themselves. I also found a cheaper quote of 570 from Liverpool Victoria, a company that has 1.5 stars on Trustpilot and some awful reviews. I am looking for advice on the following question: If my car is worth just about 5-600 GBP and is quite likely to get written off rather than repaired in case of a proper accident, should I just go with the cheapest but poorly rated option? There's a very low chance of us putting in a claim and expecting any money once the excesses are factored in, so essentially we just need the insurance to be able to drive legally.

  • If your car is worth £600, why are you paying that amount on the insurance? Just get third party insurance.
  • Comprehensive quotes are actually cheaper than only third party...

Liverpool Victoria are a better Insurer and their policy wording is better than Admirals
  • Are you using a comparison site?

You need sharp eyes when comparing insurance quotes as they often include different levels of excess or add ons such as bonus protection or legal protection, so it can be hard to spot like for likes.

With the car being worth so little and I suspect a total loss of it's valve wouldn't break you, so perhaps go for the cheapest with the highest excess no matter who offers it.

It's also worth checking out providers that don't appear on comparison sites as well.
Companies like Direct line are often competitive if they are targeting customers like you/your Mrs.

Another thing, it's almost always cheaper to do a new quote that accepting the auto renewal as there is usually a new customer bonus worked into the price of any new quote.

I've been using Swift Cover for the last few years, they are pretty much totally web based and their CS is very good. They also don't seem to bump up the auto renewal above any new quote.
It also suits me as I can login and add another vehicle for a day, week, month pretty much instantly, something I need to do quite often.

I'd be surprised if an A2 in "great condition" is really worth that little. They're quite a niche little car, so surprisingly pricey. The only <£800 one on Autotrader is a CatD with no MOT. Then there's a few scratty ones <£1,200. Most decent ones start at £1,500+.

Interesting, but not much help to the OP. He's got an A4;).

Doesnt really matter if its worth £600 or £6000 for insurance does it.

If you have a bump with an insurer that has 1 star or 5 stars its not going to make your car worth any more, you will get the market value either way. So I would pay the least to insure it, with the same cover and excess so you are no worse or better off, buy a dash camera and drive normally.

Are you saying this because you've actually got these quotes, or are you assuming - it might not always be true. Definitely worth checking.
