And where would the punter get his information from in days gone by (pre internet)?

Gossip in coffee-houses. And maybe newspapers once printing was cheap enough for them to exist.

The coffee-house was sort of the Internet of its day, only more reliable.

I don't agree with the OP's dire prediction for the stock market, but I can relate to the desire to have some other "irons in the fire." So pay off all your debt, that way you can make the most of your money. Property is often a safe place for some capital and it can produce income too. You want to keep a portion of your money in cash and high quality bonds to provide a buffer against stock crashes. There's also annuities to consider. Look at how you spend your money and see where you can save, that's the best return of all.

I fund my retirement independently from the stock market as I get rent from a flat I own and also have a small DB pension. The OP could do the same by using an annuity to replace the DB pension. I still keep a couple of year's spending in cash for emergencies.
