Investing before was nothing like today - a man from the street could not just do it. As far as I am aware one would have to be proper rich and in the know and even then it was a wild west as I do not think funds existed so existance of stock market may have been of little consolation to those who invested in something that disappeared. Would be interesting if someone with knowledge of how it used to work commented. The word "dilemma" comes from Greek where "di" means two and "lemma" means premise. Refers usually to difficult choice between two undesirable options.
Often people seem to use this word mistakenly where "quandary" would fit better.0 -

By "before" I think you mean the Dark Ages. Certainly in the 1700s and 1800 anyone with any assets could walk off the street into a stockbroker. My brief Wikipedia research suggests that buying stocks was possible in the UK in the 1500s. You have to go back to pure feudalism to find a time when if you wanted to invest in a business you pretty much had to run it. Or be Jewish.0 -

And where would the punter get his information from in days gone by (pre internet)?0 -
I meant rather from the beginning of of XXth century as that's from where stock market started being counted , did not it ?The word "dilemma" comes from Greek where "di" means two and "lemma" means premise. Refers usually to difficult choice between two undesirable options.

Thought this might be of interest to you, Wellington Management launch Climate Change fund.I'm currently saving into a personal pension (I'm self-employed). However I think when I come to retire in 20 years time the stock market will not be doing well (due to climate change). Is there an alternative to saving into a pension that is perhaps more robust to stock market / economic down turnsPersonal Responsibility - Sad but True
