Npower Economy 7 billing issue.
Hi folks,
My partner has been in the same house for 17years and in all that time has been on economy 7 plan. She wasn't aware what the plan was, thinking it was a cheap plan due to the name. It wasn't until 3 days ago i took the readings and asked why you on a dual rate for electricity. She really was none the wiser.
Over the last 15years shes has rung asking why her bills/electricity are so high. At no time has anyone ever asked or explained about her economy 7 plan and what it meant ( shes on a gas combi boiler, the previous occupants had storage heaters but changed when selling ) i.e. crazy high day time rates.
I've rung npower today and complained, in a polite way as no point going crazy over it. Explained that i'm truly shocked no one has ever questioned or explained what the tariff was for. Anyway the lady was very nice and offered a 6 months refund against what a normal tariff would of been. She was unable to tell me how much this would be until it was accepted.
Does 6 months seems fair? I wasnt expecting 17yrs worth, but was thinking maybe some more. Does anyone know what refund difference it would be?
Any advice would be great, and yes before someone says anything my partner is miffed and feeling bit silly never having noticed, but she trusted npower.

Eco 7 rates do not need to be higher than single rate even if you do not run night storage heaters. Run your day/night annual usage through a comparison website such as UKpower.co which is very easy to use.
Yorkshire Energy in my area do a very good Eco 7 tariff.. I looked last week..day rate 13 p/kwh , night rate 11p/kwh 25 p a day standing charges. There were a few others slightly cheaper..
Those rates are actually cheaper than my current Bulb rates of around 14 p/kwh single rate tariff.
No supplier is interested in your metering set up although I thought they were now obliged to warn you of cheaper tariffs available but possibly that was the best rates for your payment method. If Npower have offered a 6 month refund , grab it and run, you have mugged them.switch from Npower the second the refund go s in the bank
You could pay 100% more than you should on your house and car insurance if you don`t keep shopping around every year
It is up to the occupier to consult a price comparison site where you will find at least 50 different suppliers competing for eco 7 meters.
Many towns have Eco 7 meters fitted to most of the properties even if they have gas central heating installed from new, eg Retford, Worksop and many more , mostly not too far from big power stations0 -
I've looked at the prices and its not far double from 6am to 11pm.
There is no benefit at all for that tariff, i just can't fathom why after she's rang no one has explained the tariff.0 -
Could you give us the day and night consumption figures for the last 12 months please ?Never pay on an estimated bill. Always read and understand your bill0

Which is pointless stating without giving the figures, my day rates are double my night rates, but day rates still a competative (on payg) 14p per unit, which is less than the big suppliers charge on a single rate meter on payg
Economy 7 isn't double during the day, its around 1/3 to 1/2 price during the night where there's excess supply, with most day rates being the same or a penny or two more than standard single rate day rates.
Ubless you've done a comparison, your claim of it being expensive is just fiction, that's not to say tha npower day rates aren't expensive compared to other suppliers0 -

richjay, presumably your partner has been giving 2 sepaarate readings for these past 17 years? Some meters say low and normal some say night day, some just a number for the readings 1 and 2. Assume she hasnt changed suppliers in all this time. The cam about as you say when people had night storage heaters, the "bricks" inside were heated up at night at a cheaper rate, then the heat given out during the day. I have had economy 7 for many years,I did careful comparison, because you do pay a little more for your day rate when you have it. Most companies give you the cheaper rate from midnight to 7.30, but they do vary. My washing machine tumble drier, dishwasher goes on at night, I cook with electric do my baking before 7.30.0

I'm named on the account, they rang yesterday asking for me but rang my partner.0
