Contactless cards

I have a Tesco credit card, on renewal in august I was sent a contactless card, I rang to request a non contactless card but they now only do contactless cards. What happens to people like me who don't like contactless cards if all banks do this ?

You always have the option of closing the account and going back to using cash only.


Alternatively you could just accept that Contactless has been an incredible success story and learn to love it.

There are ways to block the contactless from working. Simple wallets/cases to actually destroying the chip/antenna.

Its handy though.

Close the account and move to a credit card that offers non contactless cards. If all the banks eventually go to contactless you will have to revert to using cash only.

Another alternative would be to try and overcome your fear of contactless cards, or join the tin foil hat brigade and invest in some weird wallet for carrying them.

Out of interest what is your concern?

If it helps I have 6 contactless cards and have done since they were introduced and never had a problem.

Do you not have any concerns about loss of credit cards, cash, banking fraud ?

I use contactless almost every day and never had a problem - only once have I been asked for a PIN.

I now carry very little in the way of cash

I have a basic Co Op Cashminder account and at present, at least, they don’t offer contactless with it, I got round it by putting it on my iPhone as Apple Pay because I wanted contactless for travel on London busses. So am wondering if all basic accounts with providers don’t offer contactless?

Some do, some don't. Nationwide and Barclays Basic accounts have contactless debit cards. Lloyds and Halifax don't. I don't know about other banks.

You can be accepting of contactless and still have an RF blocking wallet/card holder just to ensure only the right card gets scanned. As an example, if I am in Sainsbury's I use my nectar CC to pay (which is not contactless) and I use my wallet to shield the PIN. If it's under £30 it's possible that the machine could read a contactless card in the wallet and use that before I do the card in fully. Similarly on the tube I want my Oyster card to scan not my CC (because work expenses don't accept a CC bill as a receipt, so I need the Oyster one) so if I don't want to take the card out, I need to block the other cards. I don't fear mythical card scanning terminals etc nor am I a tinfoil hat loony, just practical reasons.

Simple solution, don't sheild the keypad with your wallet, use your free hand.

Doesn't cover use of oyster cards
Secondly, that means taking the card out of wallet, putting wallet away safely, then doing PIN, then getting wallet out again and putting card away

Look it's the way banking is going, it's the future. Line your wallet with foil or just take a chunk out of the card where the chip/antenna is. Contactless is fine and here to stay.
